Possible to clean install to spare HDD THEN upgrade 8.1 on SSD?

Looking to see if it's possible. I'd like to clean install W10 to a spare HDD I have to check it out and get comfortable with it before I upgrade my daily use SSD. I'm hoping that once it consumes my 8.1 key, I can "transfer" the W10 key to the SSD upgrade after the free upgrade period is over. Or would it just be better to take an image of my current 8.1 install, upgrade and re-image if I find I don't like W10?

Thanks!

Most people (and it's the easiest way) just set up dual booting.

Then, when you want to get rid of Win 8.1 (and you will!) you can use EasyBCD to rewrite the boot loader and then delete Win 8 folders and files.

If you choose to do that you'll need a backup of all your Win 8.1 data and you'll have to reinstall any Win 8.1 programs and games But you'd have to do that anyway if you did what you suggested - which, by the way, is a very bad idea. You would end up with two drives each calling a different boot loader.

So I ended up installing it on my spare HDD, but not activating it. Messed around with it for a few hours and then said screw it and went ahead and did in place upgrade on my Win 8.1 install. Took a system Image of the C drive before doing the upgrade, so if I want to go back (which yeah, totally don't see that happening lol), I can just restore the image. I'll delete the bootloader entry later tonight when I get home and format that drive again.
