]not going to help much, if games are held back by consoles.

1080p screen are still the most common screen & there are still a lot of GPU can max setting on those resolution.

if Nvidia is serious about getting user upgrade, I think they need to dive in game dev or get a geme developer to develop a high req game (like crysis 1 had back in 2007).

I think its too early to tell if the next node will be massively delayed (or cancelled) like the 22 nm was. Can they release volta on the current node, yes. Is there a contingency plan to release volta on the current node, probably maybe. Are they going to do it? I don't know, and most likely neither does nVidia yet.

Not really sure when rumors started that Volta would be 10nm. From what I remember it was always supposed to be on 20nm/16nm

For me a Die Refresh 1 year after would be more likely.

if that is true then nvidia is going completely nuts, what are they aiming to do, flood the 2nd hand market ?

Nvidia would have better luck in forcing people to upgrade by stopping driver support of older cards quicker. To be honest I feel like PC gaming is still entrenched on 1080p at the moment, and until prices lower for monitors, consoles increase graphics, or tech like VR become really cool and cheaper, I think 1080p will be here for a couple of years.

Bit of my own experience, I've got a 1080p monitor, a 290x and I can run everything at medium-high-ultra level, I cant afford (or justify) a 1440p or 4K monitor, much less anything more than a GTX 1070 graphics card for 1080p, if I wanted to upgrade.

Also, While 4K television screens are at about 20% marketshare, in computers, its only about 7.0%. http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/monitors/display/20140204235857_Shipments_of_4K_UHD_Monitors_to_Reach_Two_Million_in_2014_DisplaySearch.html

It's wccf. Cmon guys still believing this bogus website? They are doing everything to be click bait.

Volta is unlikely to come 2017 unless its massively disappointing in term of improvement. We are most likely looking at 2018, unless Volta is a rebranded pascal (just like pascal is to maxwell)

2nd gen pascal is most likely releasing in 2017, not Volta.

lol can't justify a 1440p or 4K display because of the cost right ?
that's true, in the PC gaming world there's bang for the buck like 1080p/60fps achieveable by moderate costs, but everything above that costs extra. 1440p monitors - 2x the cost of a 1080p one, 1440p 60fps card - 2x the cost of a 1080p 60 fps card. Not to mention things like 4K or 144Hz. I could build five 1080p/60hz rigs for the cost of my 1440p 144hz one, but is it 5x better ? not by any means.

GP20X or 11X instead of the GP10X we have now, a refined chip design on the same architecture, could also have HBM2. That is more realistic than 2017 Volta as Nvidia have generally been on the same architecture for 2 year each since Fermi:

2010: GF10X
2011: GF11X
2012: GK10X
2013: GK110
2014: GM204/107
2015: GM200/206
2016: GP10X

But Pascal is basically just Maxwell with a few VR/DX12 tweaks, I can't see them drawing out Maxwell that long.

If they do Volta on 16nm it'll just be like the Kepler to Maxwell transition: same node, different architecture. Certainly plausible, just nobody knows the timeframe.

btw 1st gen Fermi was GF10x, and 2nd gen Fermi was GF11x.
