Racking My Brain ... 980ti Hybrid, Classy, or 1070 ...

Thread Starter
I've decided ... it's time for a friggin upgrade ... been rocking this 670 for too long ... time to move forward.

TBH I had more or less decided on a 1070 (not sure which, wanting whichever one has the highest power limit) ... I really love the perf they're getting, and the lower power usage (having low TDP, so as not to heat up the room too much, is pretty dang important when you live in Arizona) and the new features ...

But then I saw the CRAZY deals on 980ti's going on. The friggin' EVGA Hybrid is $499 - 10% promo code - $30MIR ... we're talking $420 bucks here for a top o' the line (consumer line anyway) GPU that was $700 a month ago, with great cooling/low temps (although I'm sure it pumps out a good deal of heat to accomplish that feat). Then there's also the Reference Classified ($399 after $20MIR) and the Zotac AMP ($399 flat) ... man these are some AMAZING values. And from what I've seen, in nearly every case if you can hit 1500 on the 980ti it's beating out a max OC'd 1070 by at least a little bit ... in pretty much every situation.

Still gaming at 1200p but that may change to 4K in the not-to-distant future. Seems like the extra bandwidth on the 980ti would be an advantage but somehow the 1070 still keeps up even at 4K in most benchies ... anyways, this 670 isn't cutting it anymore even at this res, at least not with the newest games ... cannot STAND not being able to max everything out with some AA ...

Been drooling over the 980ti for over a year, but dang ... the 1070 is such a little beast, whilst still only sipping the juice ... And apparently has way better VR capabilities (which I may eventually care about) ... so ... what to do?

1070? Hybrid? Reference Classy? Zotac AMP? Or wait for the bigger Polaris chip just to see what it offers (the 480 is intriguing for it's better DX12/Async/Vulkan perf, but isn't fast enough overall for me). Keep in mind that for now I'll be keeping my 930 1st-gen i7 at 4.0 ... not too worried about bottlenecking since I'm just looking for a steady 60fps while gaming, with maxed settings ... not trying to break any benchmark records.

I'm at a loss ... What say you, OCN'ers?

EDIT: Also from what I've seen, 980ti 'stock' bios has some aggressive limits on voltage & power level (esp. on something like the Hybrid), are there some good 'unlocked' bioses floating around, such that I may be likely able to flash to get some volts & TDP, maybe hit 1550 or above? Also, anyone know if the Classified (with it's 14+2 power section vs. the hybrid's 8+2) has a better 'stock' bios, such that it allows for better OC's out of the box w/o flashing (i.e. higher voltage/TDP limit)?

Last question ... anyone know if the -10% off code on NE works for any other EVGA 980ti's, or is it just on the Hybrid (that's the only one currently 'advertising' the promo code ... if it works on the Classy, that might sway me that direction, always love the upgraded components).

I don't know I mean if you're not concerned about power consumption or heat I don't see how the 980ti could be a bad choice. The only thing is Im assuming that they have basically been pushed the tis to their limits at this point OC wise and we are just getting started with the 1070s. That said I'm not sure how much more people are going to get out of the 1070s either through.

So basically I'd say the only reason to consider a 1070 over a 980ti would be for the far lower power consumption and heat output.., which for me is a big deal because my 770 can double as a space heater. The performance of the two is nearly the same. If you threw the 1080 into the mix id have a different answer.

Dang it ... the classy and hybrid both went up by $60 overnight while I waffled. Not nearly as sweet a deal anymore, although the AMP is still 399.

What to do ...

I'd say just go with the newer architecture. You'll get a little more VRAM, lower power consumption and easier-to-manage temperatures, and also Nvidia's drivers will be more focused on your GPU for a while, so you'll get those nice fancy day-one optimisations that keep making people think that their old cards are being purposefully ignored. smile.gif

if you can nab a 980 ti for 300-350, I'd jump on it, otherwise I'd probably get the 1070

Had a EVGA GTX 980 Ti that hit 1420mhz 24/7 stable. My GTX 1070 runs at 2100mhz exactly but drops down to 2088mhz when it's over 65C.

With DirectX12 the Pascal cards gain performance. I would also wait to see what AMD releases tonight to see which card you should get.

GTX 980 Ti at 1.5ghz(a bit difficult) Mine only did 1420mhz will outperform a GTX 1070 which most hit 2.1ghz

@wannabeocer

How do you like your FTW 1070 mate?

That's the choice I'm really leaning towards ... literally every other 1070 is friggin' FUGLY (to my eyes), and the FTW looks absolutely boss by comparison.

Do you know if 2100 is gettin' hit pretty regularly on the FTW or is yours special? What's the + power limit % on the FTW? You have to tweak the voltage curve thingie with PrecisionX at all to get to 2100?

Does gaming 'feel' the same on the 1070 vs. your 980ti? Given they're getting almost the exact same FPS I imagine it would, but sometimes FPS doesn't tell the whole story.

TIA

While the 980 ti may be appealing due to the sudden price drops, it is because the 1070 reasonably put it there for good reasons. If DX12 isn't a huge deal to you, the 1070 is the perfect deal, being optimal at 1440p for price, power consumption, and vr features.
