Offset Voltage Question

So I'm tinkering with my set up:

i7 3770K
Asrock z77 Extreme 4

I used the guide on this website for OC Sandy/Ivy Bridge processors, but instead of setting the Offset Voltage to +0.005V, i've been toying with turning it down to as low as -0.030V.

I still seem to be stable at 4.4Ghz, and the temps are much lower. Isn't a lower voltage always better (if stable)?

Am I missing something? Is there any problem with turning the voltage down lower? Should i keep going to save power/temps?

I understand that at some point my system may become unstable while idle even if it's good under load.

It is pretty much the same if you are going to achieve max overclock... just push it till it crashes, then just re-add voltage until you are stable. I prefer voltage offset as opposed to locked voltage because as you said, temps are much lower! You will just have to tinker with it. I ran P95 over night just to be sure it was stable. Some people say that is overkill, but if you just game and do mundane tasks, an hour will do.

What voltage are you at right now?

I've got the Offset at -0.060V now, and running at 44x100

CPU-Z shows VCore @ 1.208V under load
Core Temp shows VID @ 1.311V under load

I'm assuming it's likely to be stable while running Prime95... if pushing for lowest possible VCore, should the best test just be leaving it idle to see if it crashes?



I've now brought my temps under load down by about 25 degrees C.

On ASRock, besides offset voltage, you also have something they call "additional turbo voltage". I think it can be used to change the voltage when the CPU is in Turbo Boost only, meaning when running at those 4.4 GHz you've configured instead of its base 3.5 GHz speed (or lower, like at 1600 MHz). You might want to look into using that turbo voltage setting instead of offset voltage. You would then be safe with regards to idle stability.

The Additional Turbo Boost voltage can't be set to negative values. So I think the best thing to do is find the minimum stable VCore.

Yup, coming from someone with an ASRock Z77 Extreme4 and a 3570K, additional turbo voltage is the way to go. I'm mostly at 1.256 V with ~70°C under load @4,7GHz. And you can use power saving features like c-states this way, when you're just doing things like browsing or stuff like that.

IIRC I have offset voltage set to the lowest (0,05V or something), and then just do my actual ocing via the turbo voltage. For that, just set the lowest offset voltage first with no turbo voltage, boot in and note your Vcore under load, after that you know what is the maximum turbo voltage value you can set (depending on how much Vcore you want to run, some don't want more than 1,3V, some are fine with 1,4V for 24/7 use. Depends on you smile.gif). Then just push your multiplier while raising the turbo voltage.

Works fine for me, if I'm just doing low performance stuff like browsing or watching a movie or whatever, it'll hang around idle voltages, and raise the voltage to 1,3V max when doing performance intensive stuff like gaming or benchmarking.

Honestly I think you are fine either way based on what you want to do. You aren't pushing the chip real hard so I think negative offset is fine, I would say that the turbo boost voltage feature would be nice if you were trying to max out the core ratio. But I would just keep testing, and drop it lower and lower until it crashes. Then work your way back up. I had to do the same to get mine stable at 5.0, just have to keep messing with it to get it fine tuned. Shouldn't take you more than a few days though. I would say you are on the right track though, and shedding the heat will always help with stability under load.

You could also try out load line calibration, that can help sometimes too.

I have all of the power saving features on too, and I haven't had idle stability issues. Just FYI.

I see a lot of stuff online saying LLC can be bad, but if the voltages are low enough I won't encounter as much of the negative effects of LLC (the spiking); Is that correct?

I don't intend to push the chip beyond 4.6Ghz, in fact I'll probably leave it at 4.4Ghz once i get it super-stable.
