So how much have you spent on graphics cards and computer hardware over the last 10 years? - Page 2

Im not gona go dig up my old reciets cause im lazy, but i've built 4 systems. I never really spend over 2k. Plus like maybe 3grand in monitors and peripherals. So yea about 11k give or take. That seems a little low though, it's probably more around 15k there's some GPU upgrades in there i'm not accounting for.

I would say about 10 grand on graphics alone.
3 full system builds so about 2 grand per system build so 6 grand.
About 6 monitors. 5 were 850 dollars a pop and one for 1200. So another 5.5 grand.
Some coolers, cases and watercooling changes so about another 1 grand.
Peripherals would be 1 grand.

Total about 23.5 grand. I recovered about 40% of it through sales etc. Net would be 14 grand.

I bought about 20 used AMD/ATI cards in 2013. Sold them all.

Have 6 AMD cards now, might get more.

Also bought 2 used 670s, 1 used 780, 2 1070s, 1 1060.

Maybe around $4000-$5000 all up over the years.

Does this include things like games and software and the like? if so then it's more like $20000 biggrin.gif

Edit: ohp nevermind, says hardware right there in the title tongue.gif

I built my 1st pc in 2013 so in the last three years...

2x 660ti $300 each
780ti classy $700
980ti sc+ $700

$2k for graphics cards

Add in the rest of it including the wife's build... $9 - 10k would be a best guess.... in 3 years.

2009 - 2GB Palit GTX285 - 300 GBP
2014 - 3GB Gigabyte GTX780Ti OC Windforce - 504 GBP

So total (not accounting for inflation) 1424 GBP

The 9800GTXs were an anomaly. I bought those for GTA:IV before I realised that it sucked at SLI and that VRAM was key for that title. Normally I wait at least two generations before upgrading. Look how long that 285 lasted.

I do plan to get a Pascal card. My aim is to be able to drive my 40" 4K monitor .
If we're gonna talk about the rest of my hardware then I can list it from memory, but I'm not gonna go look up what I paid:

So this time 10 years ago I was on an AMD Athlon XP 2100+, but I can't remember the mobo or the rest of the config. But that was built before 10 years ago.

2008
  • Chenbro SR107 with 2x Hotswap SATA-II drive cages (4 HDD bays per cage)
  • Core2 Quad Q9450
  • Thermalright Ultra 120 hsf
  • Asus Striker II Extreme (nForce 790i Ultra SLI)
  • 2x 150GB WD Raptors in Raid 0
  • 4GB DDR3 RAM, later upgraded to 8GB
  • OCZ Powerstream 1000w PSU

2012
  • Core i7-3930K
  • Asus P9X79 WS
  • Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E hsf
  • 480GB OCZ Revodrive3 x2 PCI-E SSD
  • 16GB DDR3 RAM
  • Seasonic Platinum 1050w PSU

2016 - Build in progress
  • Caselabs TH10A
  • Core i7-6900K (intended)
  • Asus X99-E WS/U3.1
  • 1TB Samsung SM961 NVMe m.2 2280 SSD
  • GTX 1080 FE (intended, to be determined) with EKWB waterblocks
  • 16GB TridentZ DDR4 3000
  • Liquid Extasy X99-E WS full cover waterblock
  • 2x 480mm HWLabs Blackice SR2 rads
  • 2x 240mm HWLabs Blackice SR2 rads
  • EKWB X-TOP Revo Dual D5 with Vario Pumps
  • 37x 120mm Fractal Design Venturi HP12 fans
  • Corsair AX1500i PSU

And over the years numerous 3.5 inch HDDs as storage drives. At the moment I have:
2x 8TB HGST He8
3x 4TB HGST
1x 3TB HGST

Aye. I can't remember quite when I did that build. But at the time Intel were doing... was it Pentium4? ... which required RAMBUS memory which was STUPIDLY expensive. So I jumped to AMD.

When I then came to upgrade in 2008, the AMD glory days of the Athlon64 series were over and Core2 was ruling the roost.

30 years

Box of 10 880K Nashua floppies were the main expenditure for a young teen.

It was like buying 10 Hard Drives back then, woohoo more software expansion...
