TL;DR, Investors got bit by the P: Go craze as well and didn't do their research properly lol.

It's typical click-bait. Investors didn't suddenly realize Nintendo doesn't own Pokeman. What happened is that investors were hoping that this would boost Nintendo's earnings (due to report this week). Nintendo will account for approximately 1/3 of whatever Pokeman makes on this. Nintendo clarified that their previous earnings guidance *already* accounted for the success of the game and so there would be no further increase, because they were already factored in.

But what happened is almost the complete opposite of what the article claims happened. Nintendo was up big in July yes, peaking on July 18th up like 110%. They then declined after that, which is like a week BEFORE Nintendo said anything (this past weekend). They declined to being only up like 65% for the month and THEN Nintendo published that warning. They then declined to being only up 45% (in and of itself being up "only" 45% for the month is hardly what most people would think of as a bad result). Incidentally, they then went back UP like 7.5% so that at this point the company is up like 55% for the month.

Basically, virtually everything the article claimed happened is the complete opposite of what actually happened. But nobody would have clicked on that sort of article; they know a, "haha, stupid investors more money then brains, they're so dumb" type article has much more appeal.

Might get a bit more complex than we're told...

From what I can find from googling it becomes very obvious that nintendo has some stake in Creatures, although how much is undisclosed. Some websites are outright saying it's a subsidiary of nintendo, while others are more vague about it, but I'm sure it's fair to assume nintendo has some control there.
Here's a link from wikipedia about nintendo subsidiaries, plus, a quick google search on the matter shows a lot of similar results. (although most of the ones I found were in other languages or on pokemon related wikipedias / nintendo.wiki)
Wikipedia - Software Development Subsidiaries

Not to mention this:

Quote:
On the 1st line, the following is mentioned - © 2015 Pokémon. © 1995–2015 Nintendo/Creatures Inc./GAME FREAK inc.

What we see are the copyright owners of the Pokemon media franchise. Among its stakeholders are Nintendo, Creatures Inc., and Game Freak Inc.

On the 2nd line, the following is mentioned - Pokémon, Pokémon character names, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DS, Wii, and Wiiware are trademarks of Nintendo.

What we see is the sole owner, Nintendo, of the Pokemon logo and the characters that inhabit the Pokemon world, such as the likes of Pikachu, Togepi, among many others.

In essence, the Pokemon franchise is owned by three separate entities: Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures Inc; however, Nintendo, in addition to having partial ownership, are trademark owners of the Pokemon logo, and Pokémon character names.

Not to mention that Game Freaks is a 2nd party developer to nintendo ever since the first pokemon game, so while they're independent I get a feeling nintendo has some say there too.

From all of that I'd assume its fair to say that Nintendo has quite a bit of control over the whole Pokemon franchise/IP.
