If failure to you is that they didn't sell as many consoles as MS or sony, than maybe. But they sold more than enough for them. They are not targeting the FPS high realistic market. They never were.
The WiiU has not sold quite well. It has done extremely poor by Nintendo standards. It has only moved 13 million units - the Gamecube sold over 21 million in comparispn, and most people considered it to be a flop as well.

The biggest problem with the Wii U was the lack of 3rd party support. The cause for the lack of 3rd party support was the outdated hardware, and to a much lesser extent, the use of a different architecture.

Solution? Use even more outdated hardware, and be sure to continue using a different CPU architecture than your competitors!

sony's and microsofts upcoming neo and scorpio is in the same ballpark. it isn't a new generation, as a majority of the games will simply be ps4 or xbox one games. the higher versions just have extra functionality, but do not constitute a new console generation.

It's turning a profit so far, so it's not a failure, but a mediocre success.

I like the idea of a portable console. I already have a PC and PS4 so a Nintendo NX would be great if it was a really powerful portable. The 3DS looks really bad, even compared to the PS vita it looks like trash.

Perfect would be :

- 199$-249$
- portable
- more powerful than Wii U
- backwards compatability with DS games

If it isn't pocketable, then it probably wont replace the 3DS, unless development stops of course.

Having lower graphics performance does not mean game will suck or be bad in any way. Most family and friends oriented that nintendo usually put out, don't need super realistic graphics like the xbox or PS needs. They don't need to push the envelope as long as it is good enough for the consumers.

That's because they've never had great graphics. Not since Super NES. If they got great graphics and gameplay they'd never want to go back.

The N64 had great graphics, but they had to be somewhat subdued due to the limitations of the cartridge format. Also, the Gamecube was very powerful for it's time - ahead of the PS2, and a little behind the XBox.

Nes and Super Nintendo use to be the console with the most games and variety, I'm disappointed how Nintendo had started to become niche focused since N64.
Why is Nintendo so scared of competition.
