Nintendo charging $300 for a console that is both portable yet can also be a home system, basically what sony was trying to do with the vita, but with actual effort put into it? Seems fair.

You keep making that reference, but thats not what Sony announced with the VITA, they announced that you can do second screening through out the house, they never announced it as a home console.

I am concerned it'll be over priced and under-powered.... Ninty + Nvidia and all that.

Pokemon X and Y sold out every last 3ds in DFW when it came out. Literally couldn't find one at any retailer. And Amazon had it back ordered too. Pokemon moves Nintendo consoles like no ones business. I'll also admit that I've also done the exact same thing as you.

No, but the PSP and vita were advertised as having "console quality games on the go" instead of being advertised as a mobile console ALA the 3DS. They hammered home that the only difference between the vita and the ps3 was screen size, that both systems could play the same kind of game.

And honestly, I wouldnt worry about it being underpowered. The xbox one is weaker then the ps4, but visually there is almost no difference. What could this system do with a modern tegra SoC on board, with 16nm tech?

So the wii u makes money. The hardware itself does not*, but the system DOES make profit.

*Also, while the console was sold at a minor loss in 2012 (one game covered the difference) today the wii u makes a profit on every base system sold.

Even then, it runs in the 60C range for the chips themselves, far cooler then laptops of old. The weight is the only detrimental factor, but this thing still weighs less then my 17 inch monster from 2008. 6 pounds isnt all that heavy.

That's pretty heavy for something you might carry around all day. Modern portable laptops weigh half that and offer 10-12 if not more hours of battery life.

We also have no idea how large/heavy this thing will be. A 7 inch tablet (ala nexus 7) with half a controller on each side wouldnt be much bigger then a ipad. And razer already has a comfortable gaming tablet with built in controls. Nintendo also made the reasonably powered 3DS. Take something 3DSXL sized, put a more powerful ARM chip in it. The chip wouldnt have to run nearly as fast while in portable mode, due to much lower rez screens, while running at full speed when plugged into the dock.
...and iPad, Tablets, etc.. are all awful portable gaming systems. They're way too large. I can't put an iPad in my pocket. A 3DS I can.

Precisely for this reason, I'm kind of excited for the NX if it's going to be a handheld. My last nintendo TV console was N64. I'm wishing so hard for a main series pokemon game on the NX right now redface.gif

You were comparing game systems from 5+ years ago to modern portable machines? That was an ultimately unfair comparison.

And you are spoiled with modern machines. 6 pounds used to be the standard, and people moved them around all day with no issues. If you want smaller, the alienware 13 is only four pounds and STILL can play modern games. And frankly, those modern "super slim" systems have those terrible chiclet keyboards. Ill stick to my nice older fashioned spring loaded keys that have feedback to them. Especially if I needed to type papers on the go, a full actual keyboard is much better then those chicklet things.

So did you just stop reading as soon as I said "ipad"? Because I also said

You could easily put a much more powerful ARM soc into a 3DSXL, but only use that extra power when plugged into the dock itself. Powergating is a wonderful thing. ARM chips already are capable of that, with their BIG.little configurations. Just switch off the extra cores when you dont need them. Same goes for GPU cores. When running the 800x240 3ds screen, most of the GPU could be switched off altogether.

Don't want to be rude, but i'm sick of this Pokemon mania, it's like a plague. I always hated these freaking pokemons maybe because i'm from the Amiga and Atari generation. The Pokemeon anime was sooo retarded sweet jeez !

I travel a lot for work, so this seems pretty interesting to me. If it's powerful enough to drive some decent looking games on my TV at home and nice enough to use that I will be happy playing them on a smaller screen too, I might be sold.

I think the real question at this point is will Nintendo EVER release competitive hardware again?

It been 15 years now since they released the gamecube which was a great piece of hardware. (last console I ever bought)

I think the answer is no, they have no interest trying to compete with Microsoft or Sony so they won't even try.

just to put performance into perspective, as well as price so people have a remote idea of what it can and cannot do:

Performance of X1 relative to 360 (therefore ps3 and WiiU to some extent performance) according to nvidia Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Nvidia priced their shield starting at 200$. expect a hybrid to cost more than that likely, unless nintendo is willing to take a large loss.

If "NX" was Pascal based (X2 perhaps) the gap widens, and the power consumption should drop since it could be on the 16nm node.
