I think the answer is no, they have no interest trying to compete with Microsoft or Sony so they won't even try.
Why would they? They can be profitable without having to deal with MS or sony.

I think a better path for them would be to take on the underserved markets. There are many games in japan that never make their way here. With the internet available for distribution, nintendo could serve relatively large niche markets here that currently dont get ANY games. It might not be CoD level money, but it's a pretty big chunk that sony and microsoft wont touch.

Nvidia priced their shield starting at 200$. expect a hybrid to cost more than that likely, unless nintendo is willing to take a large loss.

If "NX" was Pascal based (X2 perhaps) the gap widens, and the power consumption should drop since it could be on the 16nm node.

Also consider that the shield TV came out a year ago, and nvidia was recouping costs on development on not just the SoC, but on the system as well. The chip could be significantly cheaper to make today then a year ago.

Nintendo might loose money, but ARM SoCs are not super expensive, not the way we think of desktop hardware. I bet nintendo could get a X2 soc into a system for $300 without loosing much.

Fail!

I'm more interested in that small NES console. Next time Nintendo...

I'm really not sure what you're talking about. I haven't made any comparisons between consoles and modern portable machines, except that stating portable machines make bad game consoles, and game consoles make bad portable machines.

And you are spoiled with modern machines. 6 pounds used to be the standard, and people moved them around all day with no issues. If you want smaller, the alienware 13 is only four pounds and STILL can play modern games. And frankly, those modern "super slim" systems have those terrible chiclet keyboards. Ill stick to my nice older fashioned spring loaded keys that have feedback to them. Especially if I needed to type papers on the go, a full actual keyboard is much better then those chicklet things.
Well 6 pounds is no longer the standard, just like how a GeForce 3 Ti 500 isn't the standard anymore either. The industry moves on. Keyboard keys are irrelevant to this discussion as well. And that 960M? It's slower than the 7 year old Radeon HD5830, it'll run modern games, but at just barely 30 FPS, and certainly not at 1080p.

You could easily put a much more powerful ARM soc into a 3DSXL, but only use that extra power when plugged into the dock itself. Powergating is a wonderful thing. ARM chips already are capable of that, with their BIG.little configurations. Just switch off the extra cores when you dont need them. Same goes for GPU cores. When running the 800x240 3ds screen, most of the GPU could be switched off altogether.
Alright, awesome. You put the most powerful SoC ARM chip you can in there. Now you have a system with the GPU power matching a mid-range desktop GPU from 2008. You might be content with the graphics and performance from 8 years ago. I'm not.

That was my first impression. The NX is built specifically for the Pokemon enthusiast. Nintendo will sell millions. Lol.

I didnt make a comparison between consoles and portable machines either. You stated that gaming machines made bad LAPTOPS Which I refuted. I apologize for not knowing you were so confused by the word "system". i should have said "laptop" to prevent confusion.

You are making no sense here. If keyboard is irrelevant, then why does battery life matter? What do you need that 10-12 hours battery life for, to watch youtube at starbucks? If you are doing any sort of work on a laptop, then OF COURSE the keyboard matters. IT IS THE PRIMARY MEANS OF INPUT ON THE MACHINE. If you are not, then you should be using a tablet, not a laptop, as that is much lighter and has 14 hours of battery life (air 2) since battery life is all that apparently matters. And 6 pounds may not be the standard for thin and light systems, but it is far from heavy. Build up a little muscle, and it isnt so hard to move around.

might want to check out some reviews next time. Here is the 960m.

Seems to be doing pretty well for itself. You also dont need ultra details and AA on a 15 inch, or 13 inch, laptop screen. That's just silly. Also keep in mind that the 13 has an option for the 965m, and will probably get a pascal option soon.

Consoles do not need dual 1080's in them. nintendo does not needs xbox scorpio levels of power to render mario. Look at what the xbox one does with what is basically a 7770/7790, or what the ps4 does with a 7850/7870

Nothing to see here...Just Nintendo shooting themselves in the foot again...

I am all for innovation...But why not develop a system that can run in stride with the XBOne and PS4 and then make it where cartridges can be inserted into the handheld for on the go gaming...Sure graphics would need to be reduced on the on the go space/setting, but it would then have a greater appeal in my opinion.

would require having an x86 mobile device. x86 is NOT power consumption friendly relative to ARM cores. doing so would also make AMD create a low power consumption processor for a handheld. The Xbox one/PS4 uses roughly 100-120W on its own. you cannot and will not have that consumption level on a handheld.

for a reference on power consumption while streaming 1080p content

so this can be expected to be marginally above WiiU in graphics power at the most ?

basically depends on how much nintendo decides to clock tegra(e.g if they decide to have a boosted clock mode in docking mode, which would be an interesting idea), and which tegra they are using if news is true. Performance wise, tegra itself has proven that its capable of being faster. the ONLY thing holding it back that very few developers work on tegra, so its muscle was never properly shown.
