Home NAS / Media Player

Looking for input on a Home NAS / Media Player

I currently have an HTPC in my living room with a 4TB holding my media, but it's not enough space.

Current HTPC:

  • HTPC - i3-4170T, 8GB DDR3, Gigabyte ITX-wifi, 64GB SSD Bootdrive

Must haves on upgrading:

  • Store all my media and have the option to expand with ease in the future.
  • Weekly backups of my home PCs.
  • Ability to transcode and stream 1080p (4K would be nice for the future, but not needed at the moment).
  • Ability to access NAS from outside the network.
  • Low power draw (I don't need some huge server for tons of VMs or computing).

Questions:

  • Should I expanding my HTPC by adding a hotswap bay and changing the OS to some NAS OS; converting it into a server?
  • Should I buy a Synology DS416play or QNAP TS-451+ 4Bay 1080p streaming capable pre-built?
  • Is there something else that I don't know about or missing that is a better option?

Budget is around $500 to $600 on a system. I already have four brand new HGST 4TB Reds I am looking to use.

Have you considered Freenas?

Getting something set up on Freenas to do what you want would be relatively simple. Setting up a OpenVPN jail on it would allow access outside the network with ease. The plex plugin would be able to serve your media with no issues. You could reuse your current hardware, though would recommend getting proper server hardware. Only thing you would really need to do is get another 8gb of ram, PSU, and buy a new case.

One thing though, if you do intended to use your NAS as a backup target for your home computers I would strongly recommend getting proper server hardware (xeon proccessor, ECC ram, and a motherboard that supports it) regardless of what OS you decide to go with. Nothing worse than having a "back up" that will fail you/corrupt your data.

Decided I'm gonna just go with a little server build I guess. Going to pickup a dual L5630 server with 64GB RAM and throw my drives in there.
