GPU Blower Type Cooling

Do you think in the future blower type cooling for gpus will be designed to perform better?
Even with the latest generation of reference gpus they have temperature throttling issues or are overall louder compared to aftermarket coolers.

yes and no. as the manufacturing process dips below 20nm, it's obviously going to reduce the TDP of a given performance. so instead of a 300w GPU of the past, you'd have something like a 220w GPU which will naturally be easier to cool. but, the no kicks in when they try to squeeze a bigger die on the vid card so they can sell it to you for $1200 rather then $1000, then well, obviously the cooling will once again be the same as before.

this really isn't a technical issue, rather it's a marketing issue. technically speaking, they could make the card as hot or cold as they want to. but marketing wise, it may be smarter for them to sell you a card that can barely be cooled by the tiny cooler since it showed a bigger number on heaven or furmark.

They can't really be designed to perform better or quieter, especially at the current form factor. They are essentially funneling air through a specific path, which involves a lot of bouncing around and direction change, that loses performance as air loses momentum that can only be gained back by more air behind it pushing it, which again requires momentum from air behind that and so on and so forth. A lot of blower heatsinks don't even have heat pipes!

The optimal blower style would be one with a regular fan facing the heatsink (think facing toward video inputs). But then the videocard would be as wide as that fan, which would pretty much limit it to only ATX towers.

Blowers typically have special fans that work more like a water wheel, so that's another reason why they are louder, and their blades are typically very short, kind of like little snow plows. That's why they have to spin faster.

I personally like the 2 fan form factor. Any half decent case ventilation is enough to make blower style obsolete.

will they get better ? yes.
will they ever touch best aftermarket coolers? no way

I agree with what phyclum said.

Sure, things may get better, but little has changed in GPU cooler design in many years. Unless some new cooling concept / system is discovered I doubt we will see much change.

Air cooling made a big advancement from solid block heatsinks to heatpipes years ago. The first several years we saw a good progression in cooling desing and performance, but not much has changed in the last several years. I seriously doubt we will see anything significant in the next several years .. except smaller ships, hopefully with lower TDP. I think this lower TDP is the way forward.

Definitely there's a limitation on how good cooling can get.

But the issue with the 1080 throttling is due to the fact that NVIDIA does not want the fan to ramp beyond a certain RPM.
The FE even at high temperatures is mighty quiet but I am very sure that is not 100%.

Even 100% in MSI Afterburner is not true 100%. You wanna know how loud it gets, try ramping it up to 100% in Afterburner, then stopping the blower for a couple seconds with your fingers.
When it gets going again you'll see what the real 100% is.

Back to the topic.
Certainly there can be better - if the manufacturers used better heatsinks.

With the RX480, it was a pathetic, low fin count aluminium hackjob with a tiny copper core.
With that TDP, it would've been easily silenced by a mid to high FPI heatsink with a vapor chamber.
Such as the one in the HD5770's revision 1 blower cooler.
It was a small card that employed a small, yet high quality and highly efficient heatsink.

We do have better heatsinks. GPU coolers like Prolimatech MK-26, Alpenfohn Peter and Raijintek Morpheus are 2x 120mm fan coolers that work very well.

Only problem is removing their heated exhaust without it contaminating it's own or CPU cooler cool intake airflow.

This is the problem.
Everyone's concerned about making heatsinks that cool the GPU core well.

Excellent.

But what if I have a small form factor chassis with a powerful card?
The last thing I want is 300-odd watts of heat being circulated inside the case.

I'm pretty sure there's a sizeable target audience out there willing to pay for improved heatsinks that fit within the stock blower tunnel.
