Started a build log in proper section

So anyways, the options are to upgrade the ram to 16g kit and add a second gpu to run the rig in my sig as a virtual machine that we can both play on, or to buy components to make a new pc. I have spare keyboard/mouse and a second wireless xbox one controller for it.

I currently have a spare 1866 g skill sniper cl 9 8g kit of ram and a low tier cx600m psu in my spare parts. Most likely will buy a very cheap used monitor.

What i would really like to do is buy a rx 480 aib for my rig and use the 2g r9 380 strix is this if the budget allows.
Do you think this is going to be possible? Also I am not against intel for this build, but have not used them in a very long time and really prefer amd.

Ability to overclock or to have the option later would be nice, but not required.

(just to add the budget is firm, last time i told her i was doing a $400 upgrade i built the current rig i have. So going over is not an option.)

If i could fine a mobo+cpu for $100ish that would be perfect.
The game i most enjoy playing, and would like to be able to play with her is Paragon.

what about a combo like this?

ASUS A68HM-K FM2+ AMD A68H FCH (Bolton D2H) SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
$44.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132408&ignorebbr=1

AMD Athlon X4 845 with AMD quiet cooler Quad-Core Socket FM2+ 65W AD845XACKASBX Desktop Processor
$67.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113411&ignorebbr=1

Sapphire Radeon NITRO+ RX 480 8GB
$270 on amazon (not stocked yet preorder)

SanDisk SSD PLUS 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SDSSDA-120G-G25
$42 newegg

total:$424.98

i think i can find a garbage free case somewhere, and monitor for like $20-30. I need to look at shipping prices and CL monitors to adjust items based on the budget.
^i might be right on point here, and am texting my dad about a spare monitor and case now.

would something like like a used i5 be better? seem to be fairly common with good used prices, while the amd chips used prices are high.

would an i5 be better than FM2 Athlon? yes. Will you have a terrible experience in games on the Athlon? no. The requirements for paragon do not look especially high. I would opt for an 860K over the 845 though if you went that route.

An older i5 2400 or something cheap like that will smoke an Athlon.

I would not recommend an Athlon with any decent GPU. They are decent matches for things like 750 Ti or a 7850, but nothing with serious grunt.

Probably would be.

You have to overclock an Athlon 860/870/880K to 4.5 GHz to approach the gaming performance of an i5-2320 or 2400. There's no way that an 845 can reach that level, because it's a locked CPU.

You can game on an 845 perfectly fine; I can do it on an 870K and an old HD 6970. But the Athlons don't have the grunt that an Intel i5 will provide, either. Just base your decision on your budget and whether or not you trust secondhand parts.

the prices of the used i5-2400 seem to fit the build quite well. i dont mind a used cpu, but i don't trust a used mobo.

i was kind of surprised how low the prices on these were really. i do like amd, and if they had a fx 83xx i could pick up in this price range i certainly would, but even the used ones seem to be out of the price point i want to be in of <130 for mobo+cpu

actually i found this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-8-core-FX-8100-CPU-2-8GHz-FD8100WMW8KGU-Zambezi-/282114179335?hash=item41af50c107:g:Z9IAAOSwSv1XlryT

not the most familiar with this fx 8100, but many look into it a bit before i pull the trigger on the i5 2400

and going to bid on this one a couple times this week too
http://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-FX-8350-Black-Edition-4GHz-Eight-Core-Processor-And-ASRock-970-Extreme3-R2-0-/262552828398?hash=item3d215e39ee:g:AL4AAOSwdzVXkqXX
^i think if i added a fan direct to vrm's on this and keep the Oc in check this board would be fine, but getting it at the price point i list is unlikely

_______________________________________________________

how do you think i5 2400 compares to the fx 6300? they both seem at similar price pints used and possibly within budget.
^i know for a fact that paragon runs on 6/8 of the cores of my 8350 with the 7th gettin a spike every so often, and the 8th 99% unused. first 6 sit between 40-70% usage while gaming and peak at below 90%.
What i am getting at with that last statement is that all cores and threads of the sic core amd chip would be utilized. Also that the upgrade to the 8350, while is what i am aiming for, may be unnecessary.

and how would you compare the 8100 (which im pretty sure is a locked chip) to the fx 6300?

i am going to be looking for the 8300 series at a lowball price for now, but i have doubts that i will find one.

i hate to get rid of a gem from my collection, but what do you guys think about trading a copy of worms Armageddon n64 (ntsc) for a mobo, 8350, and unneeded kit of ram.
hate to lose the game, but this would turn the budget upside down a allow me to get a couple better components.

do you think i could sell this ram for over $100?

https://lansing.craigslist.org/sop/5699775216.html

i offered the game for all 3 items listed, but i don't really need or want the ram. Seems so unneeded for a gaming pc.

also any input on the mobo itself would be appreciated

I bought worms: clan wars for $3.99 this summer's steam sale. Armageddon is up there now for $14. How is that not an amazing trade for you? thumb.gif I would trade considerably more than that for an 8350/mobo/ram

i am going to sell it or trade it, and yea they had a team 17 sale recently where i purchased quite a few games. The going rate of games in similar condition is $275-300

as far as north american games for n64 go it may be the rarest. covering a huge portion of the cost of the build will be worth it to me, and if you consider what i paid for it when i got into collecting n64 games and consoles years ago it is a win-win. also that this game in particular i do prefer to play on pc.

n64 is my favorite console, and i do still use it regularly. if i didnt i might consider selling my collection of hori controllers as well.
but they are sooo much better than using the Nintendo ones.

^if you play n64 you need to invest in at the very least 1 of these.
