I posted this before but someone else corrected me and said the search function (which is what gathers all the data) will still be on no matter what.

Even if the online search is toggled off?

No worries, we can still disable Cortana via a few little changes here and there. The geeks have nothing to worry about, the average consumer though may be another matter.

On one hand, I don't care. On the other, someone will find a way to disable it. As long as it doesn't touch gaming performance, oh nos.

Time to remove the search bar. Its useless for file searches anyway.

I take it you don't use launchers.
For example, launching firefox on my computer would comprise of me pressing Win+F, typing "fi" and hitting enter twice. Takes less than a second, without taking my hands of my keyboard. Same for every other program. It's not just for file searching.

That sounds great, but taping the Win key and typing the application you want has been a thing since Vista, and is fewer keystrokes than what you described.

Winkey > "Te" > Enter = Teamspeak.

Seems like a longer process than hitting the windows key, typing "fi", and pressing enter once, which is funny because I never tried such a thing until now.

Exactly.

Doesn't always work, since you can't sort how results are displayed. Not to mention that the whole point of killing Cortana/SearchUI is to get away from youknowwhat.

If you really want to get away from MS then sure, killing off cortana and using Everything is a good enough alternative, but the most effective way to rid yourself of MS from your life is to use linux, which most people are not willing to do strange enough...
Kinda missed the point there. Say you have two programs. Speedcrunch and Speedfan. Using Everything I can sort out which one of those shows up first.

Winkey > Sp > Down > Enter is still fewer keystrokes than what you describe.

I mean, I'm indifferent to the whole thing because this doesn't effect me, but it is in fact very funny seeing all the people threatening to leave every thread, and always seeing them in the next saying the same thing. You'd think they'd just do it already, it's not like bungee jumping.

Just go KDE guys, the UI is a lot like Windows. Get WINE set up and you'll be fine.

"Online search" is just a simultaneous Bing search with the top results presented side by side with the local search. It has nothing to do with telemetry one way or the other.

This is presumptuous.

Users like us are small percentage of M$ sales. Majority being mobile and corporate. As much as I hate this I find the irony as Apple has been doing this and no one even cares.

Edit: Apple lets you turn Siri off thou. biggrin.gif

Does anyone here actually use Cortana on the desktop?
