WD Red questions/opinions

Thread Starter
Hey all. I'm looking to put some more storage in my little home server. It primarily serves as a NAS and media host, I'm setting up emby for media playback over the network.

The server is in my living room, next to my entertainment center, in a sound dampened case with as many quiet components as I could find (fans, overkill heatsink).

My main question, is what are your opinions on the WD RED drives, in particular the noise aspect? I'm considering the 4tb, so if you happen to have experience with that specific one, that's super helpful, if not that's cool though, any info helps. I know the different sizes use different numbers of platters inside the drive, which I know at least impacts speeds (mainly seeking I believe...?)

I'm also curious about the speeds doing this type of activity. Being that they are 5400rpm drives unless we move up to the pro, how are they in terms of speed?

I'm not putting it into a raid yet, but that is a plan for the future.

I have read some reviews, and things on spcr, but I'm looking for some more opinions on this from here on OCN.

Thanks in advance.

They are among the quietest you are going to get really. As for performance, for serving up media files it probably doesn't make any difference at all; the primary bottleneck will be your network speed.
Incidentally, if you don't need TLER you could just as easily get blues.

I see, thanks for the insight.

Any opinions on what the equivalent HGST drive would be? I've heard good things about them too.

I'd also like to add, I'll be doing backups to the drive as well (most likely as soon as I get a second though), and I might do more with it, but I'm really not sure at this point. I do have some SSD's that are going in to this system as well, so those will help. would it be better to go with something else to leave myself the performance on the table if I need it later on? At this point red pros are pretty much out of price range for me. I'm also not trying to go below 4tb if I can avoid it.

I'll be on gig ethernet, with LACP.

I'l lbe doing video streaming from it with emby, streaming music with subsonic, and possibly hosting a small game server (for me really, maybe a friend or two). Game server would be running off of the SSD's most likely.

I forgot to add that stuff, I was up for a looooong time when I posted this lol.
