AirFlow questions on THW10

Hi, new user here at the forum, and very new to the PC-building scene.

I have a few questions regarding airflow in the THW10 and I hope you guys can provide some insight for me before my purchase.

Here is my configuration of THW10 so far:-

Case Color: Black and White Two Tone 8-9 weeks for processing
Form Factor: HPTX (10.00)
Orientation: Standard
Left Door: XXL Window CLEAR (30.00)
Right Door: XXL Window CLEAR (30.00)
Power and Reset Switch: Standard Power/Reset Switches with Sleeved Cables
I/O Panel: USB 3.0/HD Audio (30.00)
Flex-Bay Configuration Left Side: Solid Bay Covers
Flex-Bay Configuration Right Side: Solid Bay Covers
Choose Included Top/Bottom Raditor Mounts: Two 120.4 (480) Mounts
Add more 120.4 (480) Top/Bottom Mounts? No thanks
Add more 140.4 (560) Top/Bottom Mounts? No Thanks
Upgrade the Reservoir Mounting Plate (XL-ATX ONLY)? No Thanks
Add extra Flex-Bay HDD Cages (MAC-102)? Add 7 Cages ($238.00)

I'll be using the system for UNRAID with 2 additional VMs on a dual Xeon socket Asrock EP2C602-4L/D16 motherboard, and I intend to eventually populate both flex-bays with 32 hard drives. This will be a 24/7 server and I have decided to air-cool the system.

My question, specifically is how to maintain positive airflow at the right hard-drive/PSU compartment, since there is no exhaust fan at the rear of the case at the compartment?

1) Since the MAC-102 cages I'm getting have vented fan mounts, I will be putting Noctua fans there, but how do I exhaust the hot air from the drives? Maybe fans the top of the case? If so, how many etc?

2) Since the MAC-102 are ventilated, is it correct to assume I could just opt for solid bay covers for both the flex-bay configurations, since I will be popping them out anyway when I swop in the MAC-102s?

3) Which compartment will be best to populate the hard drives first if I'm initially just gonna start with 1-16 hard drives? The mother compartment or the hard drive/PSU compartment? I ask because it seems more logical to populate the hard drive/PSU compartment first, so that the hot air from the hard drives won't unnecessarily warm up the dual CPUs as it passes through the rear exhaust fan.

4) Will all included mounts provided (SSD/2.5" HDD Mounting Kit etc) be color-matched to the two-tone configuration I opted?

5) Are there any configurations on the case I had made need to be amended for my usage?

Thanks!

Welcome to OCN! cheers.gif

Here are my thoughts on it:

(1) Yes, I would put fans at the top of the case. I would use at least one less exhaust than intake (maybe two) to provide positive pressure.

(2) Yes, that would be the best way to go.

(3) I would start with the PSU side to split the heat sources.

(4) They can be whatever you want. Let customer service know and they'll take care of it: CS@CaseLabs.net

(5) No, not really. You should be good to go thumb.gif
