Have you tried out containers? If some of the stuff you run in VMs use the same OS, you can cut down on resource usage with containers instead (Docker). I haven't tried this yet though.

Seems pretty clear at this point that the rate of CPU upgrades an enthusiast could reasonably expect to gain value from is slowing. Used to be you'd be either tick or the tock for your upgrades, now it's what, four or five years before an upgrade feels reasonable?

In exchange the resale value of old CPU/MB is decaying slower than other components. I barely got $250 for my $660 GTX 780 from 3 year ago.

But when I upgraded to Skylake, my 4 year old parts went for

3770K $257 ( MSRP 330, actually got that from Microcenter for $229)
Z77X-UP5TH $160 ( MSRP 230)
16GB DDR3-2133 $55 ( MSRP 130), DDR3 price really tanked.

So my old hardware went for 472, and my new parts(6700K $310, M8E $140, 16GB DDR4-3000 $71) cost 521+ tax

So a 4 year upgrade costed barely more than $100 after tax, though the gain in CPU performance is only about 20% in cummulative IPC and better stock boost speed, I did get faster RAM, PCIE SSD support and a CPU that enables Windows Hello Camera.

Apparently some people have put a E5-1680 V2 in that laptop.

Yea and the E5-1680V2 is the best cpu that can overclock for the 2011 socket and being 8core it's a monster.
