Just a simple question. Do you fill the reservoir to the top for your loop. or do you fill it almost to the top ? I've seen reservoirs filled part to the top, and others all the way to the top looking full. I'm referring to the part of the filling process when your loop is full and almost done.

I mean you want almost no headspace in the top of the res imo. Once the loop is bled nothing should spill out because there is no more air in the loop to displace the water. Which res do you have?
I typically fill mine all the way to the cap when possible if using distilled water and a silver coil because if i dont ill eventually get this water ring inside the reservoir and you cant open up a XSPC photon D5 to scrub it out :s
For the photon yeah since there's no way for me to open it up plus its the only way to hide the stains.
My revamp rig that im currently working on during the weekend has one of these inlet straws on the top of the reservoir(bitspower tube) so for aesthetics-wise topping it off might look a little strange and you kind of want to give the straw a little spotlight. For example lakai's rig: http://rog.asus.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/2-WNR48G2.jpg
Photons are the only res known to do that. It doesn't matter what the coolant is you should always fill to the very top imo. I've never gotten a water line in my EK or MMRS res, even when not topped off.
I have ran plain distilled water and fill to the top when needed. As time goes water will slowly evaporate and that may be a thing why some may seem a little low. My case has no window and i find out i need to refill when i start getting air in the pump. Rinnimg the xspc x655 pump res tend to keep air in circulation for a long time.
Kind of depends on the tube I guess, tubes like the photon 140 Pump/Res combo look weird if you don't top it off, probably because of the shape and size. 9/10 would be my minimum for it so I'm not creating anymore visible rings.

Do you guys recommend just adding more distilled water to top off the reservoir? I'm using mayhems pastel. A little over-diluting shouldn't make a difference right?

Fill to the top, with maybe a 5mm clearance, so the expelled loop air has somewhere to go. I fill it to the top, so I don't have to refill as often. Actually, I have not refilled it in over 2.5 years. It is about half full now. Will be breaking down the loop for a well needed clean next year.
It depends on if you have a vertical tube reservoir or horizontal and if you use a spout, so the water doesn't just splash back in.
I think its good to leave some air in, as it gives room for expansion of the fluid.
I suppose in practice the water doesn't get hot enough to noticeable expand though.
Also consider backflow when the system is turned off..
The water level will rise slightly in the reservoir, if the top of the reservoir isn't perfectly screwed down you could get a leak.
Also if your bleeding air out, and leave a port open on the reservoir, then backflow could potentially spill out of that port if its not sealed before you turn it off.
In my system, I have the water go about an inch over the top of the spout, with almost 2 inches of air above it.
