MIcrosoft is cutting 2,850 more jobs beyond the 1,850 that the company announced would be eliminated earlier this year. The new cuts will hit phone hardware and sales.

A Microsoft spokesperson said the company wouldn't comment beyond what was in the SEC filing and would not say how many of those being cut already have been let go.

Before Turner's departure was announced, Microsoft's Chairman of the Board signaled in a Bloomberg interview that Microsoft planned to make some changes to its sales organization in order to speed up the company's transition to the cloud.

As of June 30, 2016, we employed approximately 114,000 people on a full-time basis, 63,000 in the U.S. and 51,000 internationally. Of the total employed people, 38,000 were in operations, including manufacturing, distribution, product support, and consulting services; 37,000 in product research and development; 29,000 in sales and marketing; and 10,000 in general and administration. Certain employees are subject to collective bargaining agreements.

In June 2015, management approved a restructuring plan that eliminated approximately 7,400 positions in fiscal year 2016, primarily in our phone hardware business.

We periodically evaluate how to best deploy the company’s resources. In the fourth quarter of 2016, management approved restructuring plans that would result in job eliminations, primarily across our smartphone hardware business and global sales. In addition to the elimination of 1,850 positions that were announced in May 2016, approximately 2,850 roles globally will be reduced during the year as an extension of the earlier plan, and these actions are expected to be completed by the end of fiscal year 2017.

Just curious, what do sales of MS do? Do they really need cold call people to sell Windows or Office? Marketing I can understand. But sales?

There are Microsoft stores. There are sales reps for Enterprise products, there's sales reps for manufacturers, there are sales reps for consumer electronics for big box stores, there are sales reps for small businesses(I work in a small business).

Interesting. So if you don't mind, how do these MS sales interact with you? what's their goal?

Cold Calls, Emails, References. Many leads simply come to Microsoft themselves via phone call. Many clients already have established relations so there are points of contact that can be reached simply via email or phone call. But yeah, prospecting leads is a major part of any business. Even a huge one like Microsoft needs a sales pipeline that does traditional cold calling and emailing.

Phone hardware, so this is playing into Nadella's plan to get rid of the Nokia acquisition completely; something that was bought during the Balmer era. He's basically giving up on the Windows phone hardware platform, or more so he was never wanting it in the first place and reversing Balmer's lead; but focusing on Desktops, Laptops, and tablets for the 95% in terms of software development and improvement, and not wanting to do anything with hardware. Kinda like the rumors back then of Xbox being splitted. He really is taking MS to being SaaS only again with his emphasis on increasing presence in applications for Android and iOS.

Don't get me started on the Cloud crap that he is in love with.

Seems like their "unlimited resources" have turned limited and they are cutting down the costs of production of what ever they try to produce these days. IMHO they are like a ship running ashore, they are gonna crash sooner or later if they would continue at their current course. The moment businesses and govs move away from M$ products the M$ ship will sink.
Windows is probably one of the products that most people I know use and are fed up with for ages regardless if they are common users or advanced.

M$ is ruining themselves and cutting experienced developers isn't gonna help them.
