It is super easy to set up a long range Point-to-Point private back-haul if you have direct line of sight to a population center, or someone's property who has that sight picture. I have clients who have rented basically a shelf in a closet in town, had a high speed service drop to that. Then with some basic planning, back-hauling that out to their home.
Depending on what speeds we are talking, you are looking at a couple hundred for the hardware to do the PtP, up to a few thousand for Gigabit speeds. Then you have the monthly cost of the rent space for the shelf, which ranges from FREE to about what taxes on a phone/DSL service run.
If you can see a service location, or see someone that can see a service location, it can be surprisingly easy to get to it yourself. 30, 40 miles away isn't out of the question either.
