psu question for my system - Page 2

I've heard good things about the Rosewill Hive and have ordered one for a new budget build. The Rosewill Hive-550 is roughly the same price as the VS450 and should be more than enough power for your computer.

Here is a Hardware Secrets review of the 650 Watt Hive http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/rosewill-hive-650-w-power-supply-review/
And here is one specifically for the 550 Watt one from Anandtech http://www.anandtech.com/show/5674/rosewill-hive-550w/6

Both are decent PSU's for the price and should handle your components + future upgrades.

I would wait until we have some reviews of the RX 470 out before deciding on a GPU though, but initial performance seems to be very good.

From what I've gathered from reading elsewhere the new models they are selling are identical except for the cabling. Instead of the sleeved cables of the reviewed models they now have flat cables.

The new ones are also rated for almost all of their wattage on the 12v rail unlike the old ones which had 100 watts less then the total wattage on the 12v rail
But he is not from the US if you did not see so Rosewill is out as its a brand only sold in the US for the most part.

Ah. I noticed he wasn't in the US but didn't realize the Rosewill was mostly in the US. Sorry about that.

Seems like the new ones are even better though because of the 12v rail, no?

yeah, it's been a while since I saw rosewill psu's out here (belgium, europe), I just mentioned the vs 450 because it's one that I own (i have never used it though). I still have an i5-2500 and a asus p8p67m laying around here too, I might use it if no man's sky runs better on that i5. Do you think the corsair cx 550 would be sufficient with that I5 and a rx 470?

I think it would be fine. I'm not even fully convinced it matters a whole lot though so long as it's a name brand and the specs meet what you need. I used a Thermaltake TR-700 for many years and across multiple rigs with absolutely no issues despite it being generally regarded as a far below average PSU.

This is a pretty good website for figuring out what PSU wattage you need: http://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator

After plugging in the specs for your setup, that website recommends a 318 Watt PSU, so you should be just fine with the VS 450 and could probably even overclock the 470 without a problem. From the review you linked it seems to be a decent PSU.

The Corsair VS is a bit rubbish and should not be used unless you really have no other option, and as said already your Antec is much better
Forget about the VS and get something that is decent or use the Antec, and 550 watt is enough power for a system with two 470x cards.

yeah i'm going to try to sell that vs 450, it's still new so I might be able to sell it. I've read your post about the temperatures and the cheap parts and I've heard enough.

I initially bought this psu for an internet pc but I simply didn't like the smell of the psu, something with the glue inside or something. It's a problem I have with motherboards as well sometimes (mostly cheap ones). The smell did kind of went away though (I bought that psu about a year ago).

I know the psu is an important part of the system and the antec one is pretty much the only quality psu I could find at that power enveloppe and at that price (and didn't have that weird smell)

I'm going to wait for benchmarks of no man's sky and then I might get a rx 460, it only uses 75W. Allthough you have a asus gtx 950 that only use 75 W as well, I'm not really comfortable with the gpu drawing the maximum amount of power through my pci-e slot though. Do you have any thoughts on that.

Still, If the game proves to be to demanding for the rx 460/gtx 950 which it probably will because I do want to play this game on maxed out settings at 1080p, i'll just dish out the money for the corsair cx 550 and the rx 470. It's only 10 bucks more than the 450. But the temperatures still do worry me a bit though, I've read somewhere that the new cx series are made to operate at 50 degrees, since I have a pretty small case with no top fan and the psu on top,

I could dish out a little bit more when I'm at it. What do you think is the best quality psu below 100 bucks to put in the top of your case? I've also been looking at this psu

https://www.alternate.be/Seasonic/M12II-520-EVO-520-Watt-voeding/html/product/1203982

Sorry about all the questions but it's hard to find people online that actually know about this stuff and you seem to be the guy on the internetz that actually knows what he's talking about. I stumbled on your posts before and I never thought I would have been so lucky that you helped me personally smile.gif. I don't know if it was one of your posts but I had a corsair rm 550 w in the past and I sold it because because I read on this forum it had cheap capacitators.

I had a corsair tx 650 before that and I probably should have never sold that one, allthough I don't know if it would be good to put in the top of your case because the psu fan also displaces heat out of the system when it's on top and the tx 650 fan only turns on when needed.

I gave up on those psu's in the bottom of your system because I had to much dust problems.

greetings.

You have a cheaper version to:
https://www.alternate.be/Seasonic/S12II-520-EVO-520-Watt-voeding/html/product/143539?tk=7&lk=5911

Only difference i think is this one has 1x6pin + 1x6+2pin PCIE where the other has 2x6+2pin PCIE.
