[tom's HARDWARE] China Or Apple May Be Trying To Buy Micron NAND Fabs

post #1 of 20
Thread Starter
It seems like China is buying more and more tech, they are sucking up semiconductor businesses, and right now they are really angling for NAND. I wonder if that is a good thing, or a bad thing. Hard to tell at this point.
Quote:
Micron filed a form 8-A with the SEC that invokes a rights issue that is triggered if any sole entity, such as a person or group, were to buy more than 4.99 percent of its shares. The market commonly refers to the technique as a "poison pill," as companies typically use it to avoid an unwelcome takeover attempt. The move has spurred widespread conjecture that Micron is under duress and about to be bought out, which makes sense considering the recent market consolidation.
XMC/Tsinghua has reportedly been attempting to negotiate a 3D NAND licensing agreement with Micron, and the two companies recently merged to create the state-controlled ChangJiang Storage Co.
China has immense production capabilities, but it lacks the IP to produce patent-protected semiconductor products, which places the onus on licensing the technology from others.
Perhaps the licensing talks with Micron did not go well, and the newly formed Changjiang Storage Co. is the mystery company that wishes to buy Micron. It wouldn't be the first time that Tsighua tried to buy its way into the NAND market;

Wow man... at least get the title correct. Apple was mentioned ONCE in this entire article and not even as a legitimate suitor, but a large consumer of NAND that the writer speculates might want to buy their own fab. Hell, even Intel is mentioned more as a suitor than Apple in this article.

As usual my opinion is that independence is probably the better way. Hostile takeover of Micron from by a Chinese company doesn't sound like a great thing.

China is dangerous because its State IS its capitalist arm..

There's no business in China without the Party.. Though there may be party sects, they're all pretty united when it comes down to business..

I dont really see how anyone could argue that China buying Micron ISNT bad... Sure China has a ton of production capacity and would lower cost, but as we all know... 'Made in China' is almost ubiquitous with 'low quality en masse'.

PLUS theres the nasty habit China has of carrying not a bit about personal privacy and back-dooring everything they can for unrestricted government access and control. Sure there's a ton of conspiracy about this happening with other governments in the 1st World, but China lives that way daily... and has for a long time... they operate more under 'my people exist to serve the government', instead of 'this government exists to serve the people'.

Not that we have a say in it, but man do I hope Micro doesn't get bought out by China.
