HEDT on the cheap: Xeon E5-1620v4 as 6700K alternative

If you don't overclock, is there any reason not to consider an E5-1620v4 as a viable 6600K/6700K alternative?

It's the same price as the 6700K. It's clocked 500MHz slower (+marginally lower IPC), but in return you get extra cache, the full 40 PCI-E lanes and twice the memory bandwidth.

X99 boards cost a little more, but something like the Asus X99-A II isn't that much more expensive than a decent mid-range z170 board.

@Oubadah Yes, if your workload justifies the lower speed and IPC trade off for the other features, I don't see why not. It will be up to your educated guess on what your use case would be.

Hence why it depends on his use case. You should not dismiss any possibilities just because the masses use computers for gaming alone.

If he, say, plays older games or pretty much non-AAA titles, he will be just fine with the lesser single-thread performance. If, at the same time, he uses this machine for production with any software that can utilize 3, 4, or more GPUs and poses a heavy workload on the CPU which would actually benefit from the bigger memory transfer rates, then it is better to pick the Xeon.

I spend enough time troubleshooting systems without throwing additional potential instability into the mix. What's the first thing everyone says when a system is acting up; try at stock speed. Since my modern PC experience is non-stop problems, the damned thing would be at stock 99% of the time anyway.

Add to that the fact that I seem to be cursed to always lose the silicon lottery (even my Wolfdale chips were flops!), I have no real incentive to overclock.

Did you see all the kerfuffle about Fallout 4 and RAM speed? I've been watching gamebryo CPU benchmarks over the years, and noticed a trend of better performance on HEDT parts. Skyrim couldn't multithread it's way out of a paper bag. It sure as hell isn't using more than 4 threads. Why then, does it perform better on HEDT CPUs vs newer mainstream quads with higher clocks and better IPC? Gamebryo either likes cache, or it likes memory bandwidth, and some Fallout 4 benches I've seen seem to suggest it's the RAM.

It's not just Gamebryo either. I've seen the same phenomenon in CPU-bound Crysis benchmarks. Crysis uses 1.5 cores max. I think I saw something similar with Hitman Absolution too.

Well, what do you use the computer for anyway, and what hardware do you plan to run? If you want to stick with one GPU, there is no real need for the extra PCI-E lanes.

The PCI-E lanes is more about having the maximum usable slots than the actual number of lanes. 28 lanes would do, but no board will split them the way I want.

Are you sure? The i7-6850K, for example, is 3.6 GHz/4 GHz and it's Xeon equivalent (E5-1650 v4) is 3.6 GHz/4 GHz too.
