Interesting Quandary RMA'ed R9 290X 4g vram and received R9 390 8 gig vram (new but not in box still had protective film on it) back but had and R9 290 crossfired with 290x. No the 290 is not unlockable and is a pretty bad overclocker, however crossfiring the 390 with 290 does see a performance boost better then when I ran the R9 290X and 290. All are Powercolor. The reason a bit over a year ago I got an R9 290 was I won it by registering the R9 290X

Also the the 390 is not unlockable either. Now my quandry is should I go ahead and jump to a 480 or "gasp" Nvidia or hold tight? I game at 2560 x 1080. Should I try selling my 290 and get another 390 to pair with this 390?

My R9 290 is also 4gig vram vs the 8 on the 390.

the 390 tends to ┬┤perform slighyl better in some games than 290x maybe due to te improved bios or higher clocked memory, if your games support CF get a r9 290x 8GB or r9 390/x 8GB and use it with the 390

Only real options(if you just want gaming performance) is cheap Fury/980 Ti, 1070 or 1080. Going from 390 to 480 is not really worth it and you will lose performance in some games..
