[RedGamingTech] VULKAN & Graphics Technology Exclusive Interview With Khronos Group - Page 9

I am happy with the mentality khronos group has with Volkan. I wonder if its good or bad for PC gaming though. If all the developers only bothered with DX12, they would be more optimized with it since they didnt invest X time into volkan as well. At the same time, without any competition, companies tend to stack off. If Molten\Volkan was never announced, would DX12 be what it is now? With all the hate for Win 10, how will developers prioritize their time?

Over time, people will come to accept Windows 10. I make the argument in that, for several years people would hate on Vista and Win7 and that XP was the way to go. Eventually Win7 came to be the new norm and widely accepted. It may be another 2 years until windows 10 is the new norm.

I wish i knew the differences between Volkan and DX12.

The 970 is not powerful enough nor has the memory to run 4K at high settings. The 480 with its 8GB memory is definitely more capable for it.

Yeah, i was thinking that too. It feels a bit apples to oranges with the comparison. What is the root cause of the issue? If they used a 4gb AMD card, did they run into the same issue? BUTTTTT, this also does question the validity of comparing framerates between cards if they can load textures slowly. '

.... just to randomly rant... I HATE THE USEAGE OF 4k. The stupid DCI 4k which has an aspect ratio of 256:135 is stupid and annoying and should never be used. UHD-1(ultra-high-definition) is 2160p with an aspect ratio of 16:9 which is the standard.

I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft has or is paying developers to chose dx over vulkan. I don't hate windows, it's been first and current os for me, but I would change to Ubuntu the second it gets to a point it meets my gaming criteria. it seems even if games are made for Linux it doesn't necessarily mean they will run well, so less games and underperforming. I hope Vulcan will change that.

Is Ubuntu not equal or close to windows, or is it corporate politics at play? I don't care if Ubuntu is considered less user friendly. someone should start a Vulcan Ubuntu campaign with people using windows signing a petition to declare switching over Ubuntu if Vulcan brings real change to gaming to said os.
if anything it could give us an idea of how many gamers are using windows because of gaming and not because of the is itself.

Exactly this^ !

I have repeated these lines two or three times throughout the OCN and I am repeating it again. My friend and I had done some tests with BF4 in Mantle mode two years ago, we set his Core i7-3820 to ~2.5 GHz and fps was constant 110-120 even with massive explosion going on everywhere.(Edit: custom settings) It was with R9 280X @ 1 GHz core /1.5 GHz Memory.
We even underclocked the CPU to 1400 MHz (or 1200 MHz I don't exactly remember) and even with this crazy low CPU core frequency the GPU was still hitting ~40-60 fps.

Today, I tested this for you. Though this is Vulkan vs OpenGL in Doom.

Proof:
1280 x 720 at lowest graphics settings
Core i3-4150 @ 800 MHz underclock, OpenGL
HD 7850 1GB 1 GHz/ 1.35 GHz, Driver 16.7.3
Avg fps: 28.13
GPUz average GPU usage: ~51%

1280 x 720 at all lowest graphics settings
Core i3-4150 @ 3500 MHz default clock, OpenGL
Avg fps: 53.27
GPUz average GPU usage: ~99%

1280 x 720 at all lowest graphics settings
Core i3-4150 @ 800 MHz underclock, Vulkan
Avg fps: 52.57
GPUz average GPU usage: ~85%

1280 x 720 at all lowest graphics settings
Core i3-4150 @ 1300 MHz underclock, Vulkan (yes I repeat it is 1.3 GHz)
Avg fps: 64.55
GPUz average GPU usage: ~98%

Imagine how unbelievable amount of CPU clocks are being saved by Mantle/Vulkan.

Edit: Sad I am limited by my current GPU, this is why we are still unaware of how much fps even this underclocked i3 can push.
