[KIRO 7] Comcast ‘deceptive practices' draws $100M lawsuit from state

Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson has filed a first-of-its kind in the nation $100 million consumer protection lawsuit against communications giant Comcast on Monday.

The lawsuit accuses Comcast of engaging in a pattern of deceptive practices constituting more than 1.8 million violations of the Washington Consumer Protection Act. It also alleges that the company’s own documents reveal a pattern of illegally deceiving their customers to pad their profit by tens of millions of dollars.

Among the alleged deceptive practices are misrepresenting the scope of its service protection plan, charging customers improper service call fees and improper credit screening practices.

Apparently, my State is tired of Comcast.

It's more your whole country that is fed up with monopolistic ISPs and cable providers, isn't it? The stuff I read from time to time on Ars Technica (also in the comments section) is quite baffling. Customer support seems to be the antithesis of what it's supposed to be.

It's about time that official entities start doing something about it and stop being complacent.

Now we just need the other 49 to follow suit.

Bravo Washington.

So, if Comcast passes the cost of defending/settling this case over to the other states they are in, is that illegal? If not, I fully expect to see that.

Comcast/Xfinity executes and employs a myriad of deceptive practices. They are the ONLY cable/ISP provider outside of Dish in my current area (the state of Georgia does not find anything wrong with this). If only Georgia could get on board. Writing local legislation proves worthless. Down south is like a breeding ground/safe haven for special interest and corps who impose their will onto customers with few choices in various markets. We have other geographic areas in metropolitan Atlanta that only have AT&T for instance. You are lucky if you have choice when it comes to the telecom industry. Come on google fiber...........can't wait.

Ya but...who gets the money? The people this actually affected will probably get table scraps for it. I used to be with US Bank. They were sued because they were re-arranging people's purchases so they were more likely to get hit with an overdraft fee. It happened to me like 9 times. I got a 20 dollar check in the mail

A great first step would be to remove any exclusive provider agreements anywhere. Would like to see that on all sales of all products. Make everyone compete on everything.

It takes time for the $$ to be taken out of your account. So your bank allows all of the transactions.

They send the $14 through first, then one of the $1 ones. You get hit with a $35 overdraft fee for the remaining 8 $1 things.

Every bank does this. Not just US bank.

I would still rather deal with comcast than hugesnet. mad.gif At least with comcast you get service. My internet has been ~1mbs for over a month when I'm paying for 20mbs service. $100/month too. mad.gif

Like many service providers of basically any service, check your bills every time. Many corps will always add things or twist things on your bills on purpose to make more money. There have been many, many articles about these sort of practices being made public and corps getting slaps on the wrist telling them to try to hide it better for next time rolleyes.gif
