Z170 board for Dominator 3600 kit ?

Thread Starter
Currently I am using ASUS Z170-A and it seems like this kit does not want to play nice with this board ( audio goes crazy crackling and popping, DPC latency goes crazy aswell, checked with latencymon)
As soon as I pop in my old Kingston 2666 kit everything works fine. So I`m quessing it`s the memory is too fast for this entry level motherboard ?
If anyone has tested or can reccomend me a board that will certainly work with this kit that would be nice, it`s such a nice kit of memory so I`d like to keep using it, but if I have to buy a crazy expensive board then I quess it`s not worth it, cpu is 6700K.
My current kit is Kingston 4x4 2666 @ 15-17-17-35 and Corsair is 3600 4x4 3600 @ 18-19-19-39
I am not even sure if the purchase of a new motherboard is even worth it ( mostly gaming, probably not worth it but dominators look so nice).

To achieve 3600Mhz it depends on the board along with the memory controller on the CPU. If I was you I would return the Dominator ram and laugh at how much you almost spent on ram. I laugh at my 16GB 2133Mhz Dominator GT ram purchase for $320 in 2014 when I could of bought better ram for a much better price.

Pick one of these aesthetically appealing kits and double the amount of ram you have if you are going to be spending any where near that price on ram.

3000-3200Mhz seems to be the sweet spot for the 6700k, I've built 7 6700ks rigs and 2 for my personal use. I overclocked the black/white kit to 3400mhz with the same timings.

Hey,

GREAT DDR4 you got there.

I am sorry to say, but your mobo is not compatible with it. You must downclock it to 3400.
Your 170A only accepts 3400 and lower, it is the limit and no way around it. =/

https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z170-A/

Just go on user manual and read it, if not scroll down to the Memory part. I know you may have seen this but did not "believe it" but let me assure you, it is true and I have had the same issue before. (I shall shed a tear right now my fellow OCN brother as bottle necks are our biggest fear)

Anywho I hope this helped and puts your heart to rest. thumb.gif

MORAL OF STORY: Make sure MEMORY clock does NOT exceed MOBO threshold read specs!!

PS: based on comment above, it is not a "waste of money" to get such a high clocked memory, it is just inefficient use of money as 200 MHz extra would not really see a visual improvement on minimum FPS. However a jump from DDR3 1600--> DDR4 3000 you could see great improvement

Never said it was a waste of money to get high clocked memory. It's a waste of money to get ram with the label Dominator. Must of cost atleast $200 for his kit.

This kit has lower timings:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231980

This kit is double the size with lower timings:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820232297

Like I said it depends on the memory controller on the CPU to overclock memory. Anything over 2133mhz is considered an overclock on Skylake.

This review hit 3600mhz on the same board.

Thing is I got this kit as a trade so I did not buy it.
And I know what the MB manual says, thatswhy I made the thread to see if any reasonably priced boards support this memory or not.
If they dont then I'll just sell it and use my 2666 kit.

For the board to label themselves as 3600+ you need to look for Z170 board above the $200. Even then you depend on how good the IMC of your 6700K is and pushing 4 sticks OC on even Z170 is difficult. Best of luck.

Well I tried 2 different GSkill kits and both would not post. Paid the extra money for Dominator and it booted first time. So I wouldn't say it was wasted money to get memory that actually worked.

BTW - GSkill support was almost useless as I spent most of my available time before I had to return the kits trying to get them to work. They were even listed as compatible for my motherboard.

I would suggest either running the ram at 3400Mhz @ 16-18-18-40 or get a different motherboard.

Not sure if you had 2 DOA kits or after you applied the XMP profile. Corsair ram has loose timings compared to 98% of G.Skill comparable ram. Like I mentioned earlier on Skylake anything over 2133Mhz is considered overclocking and with tight timings your IMC may not have been able to handle it.

I never had to call G.Skill support for any of the ram I purchased from them but I did have to RMA a Corsair Dominator kit back in the day: One of the sticks was actually value memory with just a black PCB and a heat spreader and wouldn't run at the rated speeds. Corsair actually refunded the purchase and sent me a new kit in 2 days.

My last rig I purchased this kit for $284.99 because I knew they used Samsung ICs it ran perfectly but it was just a waste of money because I could of bought a 2666mhz Klevv set or G.Skill set for the same price.
