[Steam]July Hardware Survey, 1080/1070 market share updates

post #1 of 73

Source

GTX 1080 0.41% vs GTX 980 Ti 1.41% 1: 3.43
GTX 1070 0.44% vs GTX 980 1.45% 1: 3.29

Nvidia 56.98% vs AMD 24.68%, ratio of 7:3 approximately

So High end Pascal now have slightly less than 1/3 the market share of High end Maxwell, 2 month after release despite AIB models still being out of stock everywhere.

17.2% of the market is owned by the three most popular "DX12" GPU (970/960/750Ti)

Compared to June survey:

GTX 1080 0.10%-> 0.41%, +0.31%
GTX 1070 0% -> 0.44%, +0.44%

No GTX 1060, 0.05% for RX 480 . probably confirming that most survey gone out in early July.

So those that showed up in my June post and made up reason to deny 1080/1070 is actually selling well instead of out of stock because Nvidia gagged the supply chain please come up with better excuses this time wink.gif

Wrong

0.05% for RX480 (Dx12 and 0.06 for dx11), but 1060 is nowhere biggrin.gif

I'm quite shocked to see the 960, 760, + 660 so popular there. They were all bad choices given the alternatives.

They are cheap, NV branded alternatives and..

Lots of players on steam play games that are more CPU bound (like CSGO) than GPU, so there's no point getting a 1080/980 Ti when a gtx 960 gives you ~40 less FPS in a 400+ FPS scenario.

Fixed, I just looked at the /videocard data and 480 is not there.

I think it's because there's a minimum % requirement for it to show there.

Seems to me its a bit of both. There are supply issues and the cards are selling well. I wonder what the charts would say had there been no supply issues at all.
post #8 of 73

People are not buying RX480 to replace their older video cards for gaming. Though, it is easily the first choice for most mid-grade 1080p gamers, when building their new systems. Most high end gamers are looking to have top end cards, thus nVidia under dx12 thus far.

A rx480 is not an upgrade card, unless you running on 3 year old hardware, etc. I picked up a RX480 for my 2 year old HTPC, because it sucks less power and perfect for such an environment and connectivity, ect.

The 1060 & 1070 are nothing more than discarded 1080s, which is a high end card ($600+). In which nvidia can sell binned cheap, to recoup manufacturing cost of the 1080. AMD does not have a " high-end" part yet, that is coming in Nov(?) under Vega. Which will also have cut down binned parts to fill in AMD's high-end lines of graphic cards (AMD RX Core series?). Until then, Nvidia is churning out 1080's and flawed 1070s & 1060s for mass profits. When AMD drops Vega expect a massive price shift in market share. Even the 1080 will take a $100 plunge. Imagine the performance of two RX480s for $399 for a moment.....   , or higher up a $499 vega chip, beating or close to the unannounced 1080ti (in battlefield/vulkan)..!

Once gamers know that AMD's CGI runs Vulkan and DX more efficiently and cheaper, the market will grow in AMD's direction. Xbox Scorpio anyone?

Coincidentally, I plan on owning not only my RX480, but a 1080ti, a Titan XP and a AMD's Vega when that arrives. I have many systems, Steam doesn't account for that and has highly skewed metrics. Active players is also skewed....

Within a years time, AMD will outpace NVidia on steams list of true dx cards.

1060 uses a full GP 106 chip, it is not a discarded 1080, nice try rolleyes.gif

AMD is currently 32% behind in DX card(57 vs 25), your claim that such gap could be closed in a year is just fanciful daydreaming after too many AMD redbull***. Also, High end card such as 1080(980/980Ti/Fury/FuryX etc) current made up < 8 % of the market, even if AMD wins that market it would not have the majority of the market

Even a very successful card such as the R9 290/290X never shifted the steam poll in AMD's favor(it only forced out 780Ti & dropped 780 price by $150 but Nvidia took that in stride and still kept the performance crown), there is no sign or track record showing Vega could even come close to doing that.
