[Digital Foundry] Xbox One S Review

Quote:
Xbox One S releases today and we finally have detailed data on exactly how the new console is faster than the original model. What's more, we've had access to production hardware for several days now, meaning we can test it. The bottom line is this: Xbox One S has a GPU clock-speed of 914MHz, up from 853MHz in the older unit. That's a 7.1 per cent increase and ESRAM bandwidth increases in line, taking that up to 218GB/s effective. Some games see no difference - others run noticeably faster.
As you can read in today's extensive Xbox One S tech interview, the GPU 'overclock' is one of a number of enhancements in a new system-on-chip (SoC) package that adds support for 4K HDR media and gaming.

Nice performance increase over the regular XB1 5-10FPS

They could have OCed that GPU much more to match PS4 but Scorpio is coming.

After all the hype of the new version being so much better, tbh, feels like a let-down.
So a bit of an OCed GPU, and HDMI 2.0? This means that games will just upscale and not really render in 4K.
I expected a new GPU, maybe a cut down polaris.
I don't understand why they are just going to stick with a few years old tech for the next few years? More of a cheap way to milking the hell out of the current tech, in order to convince people to upgrade.

so you pay for a "new" console, the only difference being the name and slight overclock?

Now I'm not up on consoles all that much, but is this Xbox One S supposed to be the new upgraded console we have been hearing about, or is that coming later? Is this simply like a "slim" variant?

Yea I believe it would make the XB1 OG an even tougher sale.

HDR display capability
4k media not games...
Lower power usage
Improved performance
Smaller package

Seems like a worth while purchase if you don't have and XB1 OG to me.

So AMD does have some experience with TSMC 16nm process then, is there any specific power usage numbers on this new x box out there?

I hope people here are just trolling.

When did they specify massive if even noticeable performance improvements in advertising? The only reason it can be a let-down relative to hype is if you yourself overhyped it using incorrect information.

-40% smaller form-factor
-HDR support
-Not exactly more expensive than the launch price of the Xbox One
-Not specifically meant as an upgrade for those who already have Xbox Ones
-Internal power brick
-Various other slight improvements

Fascinating! The performance gains from the faster hardware isn't much but it wasn't really intended to be, it's also lot smaller and not much louder either.

It's also very interesting that the SoC was built on TSMC's 16nm FinFET production process, the power consumption and heat output is significantly lower as a result of this.

"In our tests, it draws anything from 25 to 40 per cent less juice from the wall, depending on the application."

I'd say that's pretty decent^
