I've done several of these in my 10 years of OCN. I'll try to do another when on PC and not phone.

Off the top of my head in order of purchase to the best of my memory of just desktop CPU:

Intel DX2 66 mhz
AMD K62 350 mhz
AMD XP 1800+
AMD XP 2600+
AMD A64 3200+ (Venice) FIrst chip I overclocked
Intel C2D E6400
AMD X2 3600+ (Brisbane)
Intel Q6600 (SLACR)
Intel i5 3570K
AMD FX 6300 Oldest son uses with 7950
Intel i7 3770k My main system with the tri-x 290
AMD FX 8350 My HTPC with dual-x 280x
AMD Sempron 140 Used for mining with 4 gpu sold
AMD FX 8310 my youngest son used with 7850
Intel i5 4670k my wife uses with OEM 290
Intel Q6800 got this in a free server
Intel Q9650 got this in a combo for my nephew's $100 christmas build, gave him my HD5870 to use

Early GPU i'm a bit unsure of but I think this is what I"ve had:
Generic ISA 1 mb GPU
ATI Xpert@Play 8 mb
Nvidia MX400
Nvidia 5200
Nvidia 6200 LE
Nvidia 8800 GTS 320 mb g80 (still have)
Nvidia 8800 GTS 512 mb g92 (still have)
AMD HD5770
Nvidia core 216 GTX 260
AMD HD5870
AMD 7950 x 4 (sold first 2 for $750 when mining started then bought 2 more for $250 and started mining)
AMD OEM 290 x 3 (started mining)
AMD 280x x 3 (for mining)
AMD 4890 (for a rig I was selling)
Nvidia GTX 280 (for a rig I was selling)
AMD HD7850 (to upgrade the HD5870 in my son's PC so I could give HD5870 to nephew)

Here is the oldest invoice I came across

Welp, honestly can't remember the first computers I'd tinker with but they were up there in age... first official cpu of mine was a Pentium II, then P3 450mhz.. then P4 1.6A.. then P4 2.53 (rambus pc800 based), then p4 2.8E then p4 3.4C... (northwood > prescott) - then of course more s939 and am2-am3+ AMD chips than I count still in my possession but notably a FX-53, x2 4200+, opteron 165, opteron 180... then stayed on socket 939 until 2011 when I went am3+ to an FX-8120 than to an FX-8350 than a FX-9590... and most recently a pentium g3258 which I've now gave to my nephew and my current i7 4790k...and my AMD A8 6410 laptop apu and Intel Core Duo (not c2d) laptop cpus if those count.. I've still got most of these cpu's in a box

For gpu's...

Voodoo 3, Ati Rage 128, Aopen Geforce 4 ti4200 128mb agp8x, BFG FX-5200 128mb, Sparkle Geforce 6200 256mb, EVGA 6600gt, EVGA 7600gs, ATi x800pro, Gecube x1950pro 256mb, Gigabyte gts450 1gb, Asus gtx550ti 1gb, EVGA gtx480, XFX 7970ghz edition and of course my current Sapphire 290x

and like the cpu's... most of these are in a box too. I might need to reconsider hoarding all this.

I'm sure I'm forgetting plenty unfortunately... If I was to give details on each system's specs I'd just bore everyone. But needless to say, the Rambus based pentium 4 2.53ghz and my Geforce 4 ti4200 (128mb) was my first build that got me truly into pc gaming.. So many hours of Unreal Tournament, infantry, morrowind, counterstrike beta through cs:s, bf1942, mohaa, WC3 (no, not witcher 3, warcraft 3), etc.

For my current rig, my last major upgrade really was my 4790k a ways back now (and the 290x at launch from my 7970ghz)... I did add two additional ssd's for a total of three to it if that counts but nothing else really exciting. Hardware has slowed down enough to wait longer on upgrades... unfortunately.

My "The Banshee" rig has come a long way from what it was when I first built it, Started out with this:
The Banshee (Click to show)
CPU: AMD A8-3870K w/ HD 6550D GPU
Mobo: AsRock A55M-HVS
Ram: G.Skill DDR3 2x2GB 1333MHz CL9 1.5V
Case: Rosewill Blackbone
PSU Rosewill Stallion 500W
HDD: Western Digital 500GB Caviar Blue

Picked up an ECS GTX 560 SE & Hyper 212+ a little afterward and ran with that for a while, then I upgraded the gpu to an MSI HD 7950 TFIII OC BE and got a 2x4GB kit of ram as well.

Snagged an i7 920 + Evga X58 SLI LE from the local classifieds soon after because the little oc'ed APU couldn't handle the beast 7950. biggrin.gif
I also got a Rosewill Xtreme 750W 80+ B psu to replace the terrible Stallion 500W.
Used this setup for a while.
Pic:

Bought two more 7950's for Tri-Fire eek.gif

Then I got my Evga 1300 G2 psu and Fractal Design Arc XL to power and house this ridiculous setup (No pics)
Unfortunately the two XFX cards died soon after, one had mem artifacts and the gpu die actually shattered into pieces on the other.

Didn't learn my lesson though and bought another two 7950's because I REALLY wanted tri-fire. tongue.gif
One was another MSI TFIII OC BE and the other was a Sapphire Dual-X OC Boost edtion.
Got an H110 as well because my 212+ wasn't cutting it for 4.2GHz.

Upgraded to my current Evga X58 Classified 4-Way SLI mobo. Allowed me to have triple slot spacing between the cards.

Got an X5650 6-core a bit later to boost cpu power over my 920 and upgraded to 24GB's of ram.

One MSI and the Sapphire card died eventually, that was the end of tri-fire for me. tongue.gif

Decided to cut my losses and upgrade the gpu to something newer so I got a nice Gigabyte 780 Ti WF3 OC then later bought a Zotac 780 Ti OC for SLI

Did up my first and current custom water loop:

Recently I took out one of my 780 Ti's since I wasn't really using it much but I'm getting the itch to get it faster again. So once I get a water block for the second 780 Ti I will throw it back in the system along side a recently bought GTX 680 that will be used as a PhysX co-processor. I have a waterblock for my mobo as well but I haven't gotten around to putting it on.

That's all folks, quite a few upgrades in the span of four-ish years, I don't think I'll upgrade it for a long time now as it's a solid rig that should last me quite a while. thumb.gif

It's amazing to look at that and see how much has changed in 18 years. We now have flash drives with double the capacity of that $204 8.4 GB HDD, and you can get them for $5 if you look around.

$236 for a K6-2 350 surprised me until I looked at the date. It had just come out in late August of '98. Most of the ones I remember seeing were in the 1999-2000 time frame, and they were cheap as dirt by that time. But even in '98, they were 90 percent as fast as a P2-350 for less than half the price.

$229 for a 17" CRT monitor, plus a 56K modem, and a floppy drive...all things I don't really miss that much. Still like the big Trinitron CRT's, and had one for years, but my back doesn't now than I'm in my 40s, so that's probably for the best. smile.gif

Not too long ago, I saw a video of some high schools kids freaking out when they got handed a PC from around 2000. Pretty funny. They have phones that can do things that state of the art PC's couldn't do then.

The k62 was faster than the p2 and much cheaper. Same as the athlon XP 2600+ being 1900 MHz and faster than the p4 2.6

My 2 GHz Venice a64 3200+ ocd to 2.6 which made it faster than 3.9 GHz p4

The x2 walks on thr pd, Intel was Getting destroyed by amd until conroe came out
