Possibly related, is the memory compression actually new to the anniversary edition, or is it just new to being displayed in Task Manager?

Seems better to me, but I also turned off pagefile, not sure if that helps or makes usage worse. IIRC it adds ram usage as opposed to pagefile?
I need to figure out how to disable and uninstall this Xbox thing... I noticed when testing out FC4 that I had like this block that said "screenshot CTRL + S" or something and another screen for the Xbox... ugh. I also felt like there's pretty bad stuttering in the game, first time I've ever experienced that... I'm latest drivers with my GTX970 also. Fresh clean install on my new Sandisk X400 512GB m.2 drive. Seems the OS is working just fine, no issues, but will take awhile for me to get everything set back up the way I need it to be.

I haven't disabled the page file or anything (same settings as pre-update, just a minimal sized page file).

But I haven't seen one of the "Windows is low on memory" warnings since the update, even when I do things that used to trigger it (multiple games + visual studio + chrome + background junk open all at once anyone?).

WinKey + G opens the game bar settings stuff if that's what you mean, but it's not new to the anniversary update. You may want to make sure the background recording is disabled, but I don't know if that would have turned on if you had it off before.

Turning page file off is useless as Windows will assume you have left Windows to manage it simply because Windows needs a page file and a lot of software will not work without it. In Win 7 Windows will warn you that the PF is too small and that it needs to create one and auto manage it. Post Win 8.1 Windows will create one, you just no longer get the warning.

never had this issue
working without page file for 4 years now (16GB and 8GB ram systems), never once windows said anything about missing its page file
post #135 of 227
I've generally left the pagefile but limit it to 1-2GB just to keep Windows happy.

Have found that CCleaner will uninstall the "garbage" apps that I have no use for in Windows 10--Xbox, People, Weather, etc. etc. Found that out by running the Insider Previews. First thing I do with a new preview is use CCleaner to uninstall all the stuff that is useless
for my needs.

I feel exactly the same way. I've been using edge / Opera as my browsers of choice lately.

I use win7 without it for several years since it came out(i started with 4 GB RAM), i didnt encounter any instability or software that was screaming for pagefile. BTW if you have 8 GB or more RAM just switch it off entirely...

/EDIT
Just tested it, i switched off the PF in 8.1 and it stayed off even after a restart...

Why turn off the PF? Just curious?

It gives you a "boost"

but since most of us have SSDs the point is moot.

To save 12-16gb of space on an SSD ? biggrin.gif

i used to do it on my first 60gb ssd once BF3 got huge (dlcs). didn't face a single problem so i still do it. and TBH system feels a bit snappier without PF.
