New FX-4350 Can't Possibly Be DOA...Can it?

You may remember the box I made up of new spare bundle parts left over from my big project last year.

The MB is an MSI 970 Gaming and it had 8G of new RAM and a new 650W PS. I didn't really have a good CPU for it, but used a Phenom II X3 just for test purposes until I could get a long deal on an FX- series CPU. Finally, Fry's had FX-4350s for $70 today, so I got one. Checked the CPU compatibility on the MSI website and it's supposed to be fine.

I dropped it in with no problem and then reset the fan and powered it up -- nothing except the fan and the motherboard lights. No video output at all...ZERO.

OK, I pulled the plug and removed the CPU and replaced it with the Phenom II and it works.

Switched the FX-4350 back in...nothing.

Any thoughts? Am I just stupidly missing something obvious?

Thanks for any help!

You could try updating the mobo bios, It might be a bug in that mobo. If that doesn't work, I'd return it.

BIOS is the latest one.

I was thinking of clearing the CMOS, but figured that if the Phenom II could take me into reconfig mode when I put it back in, then the FX-4350 should be able to get that far at boot, too.

Right? Wrong?

As long as you can boot the system with the Phenom, you can flash the bios. The mobo might have a bug that doesn't work with that CPU. If you flash a newer version, that bug might be addressed with the update.

If I were you I will clear the CMOS, Did you updated the Bios with the latest version M4 ?
That motherboard supports that FX4350, it should work just fine
I don't think that the cpu is bad, clear the CMOS and start it with the FX and let us know what happens.

Cleared the CMOS and it ran. Man, I haven't had to clear the CMOS on a box in at least twenty-five years! rolleyes.gif

It's kind of shocking...

Auto-config in the existing BIOS seems to have the right settings. Any tips for tweaking this will be appreciated. wink.gif

Thanks for the encouragement!

Oh!

Does anyone remember the TERRIFIC arguments about whether the Fury RAM could ever be even manually tweaked to work properly and at the advertised speed with this CPU?

Aside from the system now working, the MSI BIOS set everything right with the RAM on the first boot and it's apparently running at spec with no intervention on my part.

I'm amazed!
