Too bad. You could always do a red mod on your strix and get the best of both worlds. $300! I got mine for $200 and free shipping due to an american express promotion on New Egg. Was it the ASIC quality or is that what they go for now?

I've just updated post 115 in Polaris bios mod with this information:-

You can set a voltage limit so even if you make a mistake with offset command it will not go over that.

Above command sets 1.36875V as limit, further info on VMAX feature in this post of Hawaii bios mod.

I listed it for $300 OBO just to see if anyone would bite. The first person to message me bought it. He didn't even try to talk me down either. I used my trusty craigslist line. When they say "Is this still available?", I say "Yes it is, but it may not be for long as I have a few other people wanting to look at it". lol

He is an ethereum miner. He said he currently has over 40 RX 480s running 24/7. Now I know why they are all out of stock and people are selling them for $300 plus on Ebay....

In six months you'll be able to buy it back from him at 150 after the mining difficulty moves on. lol

@gupsterg Thanks for the update. I gave you rep for that. Or I tried right before my internet went down.

What is a Red Mod?

I watched a video on the Strix RX 480 PCB. The guy was pointing out every part of the power distribution, it is severely overbuilt. The best part about it, the GPU core is powered entirely by the 8pin. People say the Strix cards are overpriced, but when you look at the custom PCB and the heatsink, what do they expect?

As for the other AIB cards, I feel the Sapphire Nitro+ is the worst. The heatsink is meh and judging by reviews the temps aren't much better than a reference. The PC Red Devil is pretty nice, but aesthetically is just not for me. The power delivery components / setup isn't nearly as nice as the Strix either. The XFX RX 480 GTR on the other hand appears to be a solid card. The power delivery components are high quality and the heatsink is top notch. I guess its the coolest AIB RX 480 yet, running cooler than the Nitro and Devil. Aesthetically pleasing with a nice aluminum backplate. 3+2 year warranty (3 years on whole card, 5 years on fans) and the fans are swappable.

What do you think of the XFX? It is in stock right now too. I like the STRIX more and I feel that it will be a "better" card. However, Asus has the absolute worst customer service / RMA Service / RMA policy and procedures and I can't believe I am even considering buying anything Asus after straight RMA nightmares I had with an Asus monitor and ROG notebook on the past. I went almost two months without both.

The AMD variant of "the mod" taking the reference cooler off and slapping a cpu AIO water cooler on to make a hybrid. There are thousands of pages on it here.

At the moment if I was buying my preferred choice is the XFX RX 480 GTR . The other thing is XFX allow cooler swapping in US / Canada.

Does water-cooling or installing a third party cooling solution on my video card void the warranty?

Installing third party cooling solutions does not void warranty on our products. Just be sure to keep the original cooling solution as it will have to be on the card if it is ever sent in for RMA. Products returned to XFX must be fully assembled with the original thermal solution (heatsink, fansink, etc) that was installed at the time of purchase.

XFX graphics card were designed to perform optimally with our manufacturers thermal solutions, however you may feel the need to push your performance higher than what we have designed it for, so we can only gurantee the performance and quality of the product as it was originally intended so you should keep in mind that over clocking your graphics card and the use of water cooling solutions is at your own risk and that damage to the card via improper use such as unregulated power overages will not be covered. Any physical damage such as burn marks or damaged PCB will void ALL warranties.

This modder friendly policy only applies to the United States and Canada.

I've only had HIS Sapphire and EVGA.in my last three builds. Before that doesn't matter. I'll have to consider XFX. It was bewtween MSI and Sapphire for me before learning this. Good info. I thought MSI's new contract with EKWB might give them an edge as I thought there'd be a better chance of blocks for their custom cards. The only block they did for a custom 390x was for a MSI card to the best of my knowledge. But if XFX doesn't void your warranty they'd have to be my new go to brand on the red side. Thanks.
