Looking for a good wifi dongle

Thread Starter
Hey all,
I recently build a small form factor computer using the RVZ01 case from Silverstone.
I bought a cheap wifi dongle from TP link (TL-WN725N).

I use it for about two months now and the wifi signal is crap lol.
The one I got right now only uses 2.4Ghz frequency and is rated 150Mbits/s on wifi N.

I was considering buying a 5Ghz dongle or maybe a wifi AC one.
But I don't know if the wifi ac one will give me more speed or reliable wifi signal compared to a regular 5Ghz wifi N dongle.

Most of the wifi network are in wifi G or wifi N.

Do you have available PCIe slots or does this have to be USB?

It must be a USB one since it's a mini ITX build the only PCIe is used by the graphic card.

It looks like you already are aware, but just to be sure, a wireless AC dongle will not get AC speeds unless the router is also an AC compatible model, it will be backwards compatible though and still get N and G.
I'm not sure if you are connecting to various wifi networks or what your personal router is, but keep that in mind.
Also, it can't hurt to buy into AC potential now and later get an AC router to match it, prices can be close enough to consider it.

I ended up recently looking through wireless AC wifi cards and USB dongles and ended up going with a PCIe card since I had a slot for it, but I will pass along the USB dongles I looked into:

For cheap, i considered this refurbished one, https://www.amazon.com/NetGear-A6200-Wi-Fi-USB-Adapter/dp/B00F0SRR1C/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1457747520&sr=1-1&keywords=a6200
Non refurb of the same, https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-WiFi-USB-2-0-Adapter/dp/B008HO9D7M/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1457747520&sr=1-2&keywords=a6200
Both of those are USB 2.0 though and I believe can limit speeds a bit.

USB 3.0 version of the above, https://www.amazon.com/Netgear-AC1200-Wi-Fi-Adapter-A6210-100PAS/dp/B00MRVJY1G/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1457747235&sr=1-1&keywords=a6210

Lastly, an unknown name to me, but USB 3.0 for a good price, https://www.amazon.com/EW-7822UAC-Dual-Band-Adjustable-Foldaway-Performance/dp/B00BXAXO7C/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1457747959&sr=1-2&keywords=edimax+wireless+ac+usb

Hey I checked the links you gave me.
The refurbished netgear one is very interesting but it doesn't ship to Europe unfortunately mad.gif
I found this one that ship to Europe : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F6EL6O4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3S9AM3XZL1DJJ
If the shipping cost isn't too high it could be a good deal as it sells for 22€ - 30€ on the market.

I can get a used one for less than 14$ which is approx 12€

Oh, sorry I didn't even think to glance where you are located.

By the way, I forgot to add that I believe the 5Ghz band is certainly faster, but the range on it is typically shorter than the 2.4Ghz.
I don't think its a crazy distance shorter, but if you end up at a spot far from the access point or router you may try connecting to the 2.4Ghz band to compare, assuming they have both 2.4 and 5Ghz available at the same time.

I can buy an unbranded AC wifi dongle from ebay for 12€.
But the thing is I don't know if there's worth the money lol
They probably are worse than cheap branded ones ))
I am one to always try and get a good deal but also only buy things once so if it looks super cheap then I'd personally pass.

Also, if you are leaning towards buying one for wireless AC, then you should look a bit further into the USB 3.0 requirements.
I don't remember much more than just recalling USB 2.0 can only bring in so much bandwidth and you wont utilize the potential max speed AC is capable of.
So check into the truth of that and it may help narrow down your search to only USB 3.0 dongles, which unfortunately will also typically bring the average price up a bit, but is hopefully worthwhile.
