In modern days a simple arena shooter won't get your very far. Even Epic Games and Cliff Bleszinski are moving away from standard arena shooters.

Not true at all, counter strike is using the same formula from 90s, and it's easily the biggest shooter on the market, there's no history of a modern tripple A arena shooter failing. People just haven't put the time into making a proper shooter.. AKA proper match making that every RTS has had since the 90s, except here we are in 2016 and the only shooters with match making are CSGO and the recently released overwatch which is basically an arena shooter, and guess what they are both wildly successful.

CS is not an arena shooter and it's popularity goes not just from good match making. Valve pulls quite a lot to maintain popularity of the game - skins, tournaments, dirt-cheap during sales. Overwatch is popular not just from being a well developed, but by being a Blizzard game (a new IP as well).

Looking at the new UT and we see quite a sad view of a game being stuck in pre-alpha for almost two years with little info if Epic will ever finish it. if Quake Champions has the feel of old quake weapons with some class abilities, that will be pretty good for me. A new Enemy Territory game would be even better!

I wouldn't say it's "stuck" in pre-alpha since many games have taken much longer to reach alpha status. The last update was less than a month ago, and it was pretty large.

... the new unreal is a community built game, that's in development. That's your proof of a modern arena shooter failing?

What arena shooters have there been released recently, besides the latest UT (though it is more of an Early Access i guess)?

You know i'd like to think that's a rhetorical question that proves my point.... There haven't been any modern arena shooters with match making.

Kick-Ass.
I'd rather have this than all the UTs put together.
UT's is slow as a granny. When u fire the rocket launcher it first goes into weapon release animation instead of firing the rocket instantly. And the rockets are dead slow.

A crap ton of f2p games, as well as a ton of games where the mp wasn't a focus ( or the whole game sucked ).

Quake was the defacto so long I don't thknow no anyone can easily fill that gap. Q4 had amazing multiplayer, just couldn't take off.

My biggest issue is, many games had chance but didn't get one of the most important tools. Mods, due to consoles not having them. Mods are what made quake good, server and client side. That is a must for a classic arena shooter to survive.
