Question about gaming performance on laptop.

So I recently bought a new cheap laptop, mostly for work but I'll use it for light gaming as well.

It's an Acer Aspire E5-575-50C0. It has a Core i5 6200U, 4 GB of DDR4 RAM, Nvidia GeForce 940MX 2 GB GDDR5. It can run GTA V but after a bit of playing, it gets extremely stuttery. I check my temps with MSI afterburner, which for GPU it hovers around higher 70s and CPU slightly higher. It doesn't throttle, GPU clock remains high, but the usage drops while CPU usage spikes, which means a bottleneck. The CPU is powerful enough for the game, so I was wondering if it's my 4 GB ram causing the bottleneck?

Also, is it easy enough to add another 4 GB stick of ram to it?

I would recommend a cooling pad when gaming if you don't have one already. If you look at the bottom of the laptop is it one sold piece of plastic or does it have an access panel? If it has an access panel then upgrading the ram is easy, if not then it might be tricky depending on how they designed it.

I recently bought an Acer as well which I posted questions about. It has the same CPU as yours and in games (battlefield 4) the CPU usage gets pretty high. Since GTA has a lot of AI going on it does use a lot of resources from the CPU and memory so having at least 8gb would probably help.

Thanks for the info.

I looked and it seems to have a access panel, but I'm not sure. Anyway, my laptop has this model of RAM, but I found THIS model around here. Will using that model cause any problems?

It should be fine. From the info you shared they run at the same speed. The timings may be off though and the motherboard might make some adjustments. Generally I recommend running two sticks of the the same specs. It should be fine but I would run two sticks that are exactly the same but that's just me being picky.

Thanks, I actually got a slightly more expensive but ideally specced Samsung RAM, and tried running GTA V again after installing it. It's now buttery smooth, well not as smooth as my desktop, but it's pretty good. All the stutter is now gone and I can get a decent 50 FPS on my laptop's native resolution, which is pretty good.

Thanks again for your help.
