FYI - double parity is close to as resilient as the 3-way mirror, and triple parity (RAID-Z3 in ZFS) is exponentially more resilient than even triple mirror.

For files that are primarily read-only and are streaming reads and writes (which TV shows would likely be) parity based RAID is very suitable. Yes, rebuild times will be longer for large disks depending upon the amount of activity on the system. That's why there are multiple redundancy schemes to protect against multi-disk failure.

As far as building a system yourself, yes it can be done (I've done it, many times) but it's way easier to have a pre-built system that sends updates to you that you can apply via a web interface. Patching Nexenta, FreeNAS, Nas4free, or any other number of open source systems is not the way I want to spend my weekends, even if it's my own system. For a system that is going to live at your aunts house, I would highly suggest a prebuilt system that is easy to maintain and manage.

Thanks for sharing your experience, I did not expect quality of life to be that much better with a prebuilt system. That is really shifting me over to go with a pre-built NAS

You would be best off using plex as the streaming software. Works great for streaming media over the Internet.

Also you don't need a 8 core cpu for such a basic task. A quad is more than enough. My server has a quad core amd apu, has no problem handling plex.

Plex can handle whatever you throw at it, its all about where the Plex Media Server is. If the Media server is on a standalone NAS like a qnap then i might worry about high bitrate 4k transcoding but if you made your own NAS and put in any Quad core intel Xeon processor from the last 5 years you should be good to go.

I understand quad cores are dirt cheap, but even 6-8 cores aren't that much more expensive.

Unless you want to poor more money in it than needed, stick with the quad.
I know this is OCN and I know that overkill is the mainstream here, but I think you better invest the money you save compared to an octo-core in better drives (HGST Ultrastars for example).

well i would probably agree with going a synergy setup just for the simplicity. i am liking the hgst nas drives i have. mine have been fine so far but you may be fine with the slower WD red drives.

if you want to go with a custom setup need to find something with quad core xeon setup on ebay for a good price, raid card and a but load of hard drives. imo depending on the shows and how they are recorded you could re-encode them so they take up less space. also could do multiple smaller raid setups so rebuild times are shorter but may need an extra drive or two.

also want to note try both plex and emby then choose.

just saying if you look for deals i was able to get a data center takeout motherboard, 8gb ram, and a xeon e3-1230v1 (sandybridge i7) for $200. a nice 3ware 9650se-8lmpl raid card with battery backup for another $60-70 that handles up to raid 6 and 4tb+ drives(with new firmware).

If you're only using it to stream and at most two streams at a time a quad core is perfectly fine. The only reason you would want a quad core is if the client needs the media to be transcoded, and that's only when you're using something like Emby or Plex. If it's just file storage a dual core would be fine.

I would look into unRAID or Freenas for the OS. Both use software raid. unRAID would allow for the hard drives to be different sizes, easy to slowly increase storage over time. The biggest expensive you're going to have is the hard drives. The rest can be had for $500-1000 but it really depends on what you choose.
