Connecting the receiver to your GPU with HDMI will technically provide better quality sound than connecting to your sound card. Whether or not you'll hear the difference I can't say. Here is a thread on this subject:
Most TVs have HDMI now so it's better to use that than anything else. The white and red ports are analog inputs using RCA connections, but there probably isn't a need to use them. Using them bypasses the receiver's digital to analog converters.
Ethernet is for connecting it to your home network for (hopefully) easier updating, accessing it remotely, and other stuff that I don't find useful.
