Best USB Ball Mouse (Yes, you read it right) - Page 5

yea you could make a special purpose circuit that's dedicated to updating a triple buffered register at several thousand hz

Hey maybe you could use some kind of image sensor and sense the color on the wheel, put a little hue circle on it and then you don't have to update it multiple times to get a single count of movement :^)

It's better than ICS because you don't have any SRAV problems :^)

Is the translation of ball onto encorders really not a problem area? And again, can you imagine you'd feasably be able to engineer a ball tracking system to work at those speeds? Genuinely curious. I can't see it.

Thanks much. Pretty intredasting. Unfortunately the PS/2 "polling" (thanks wareya) ends there. We'd need USB ball mice to see just how far that can go.

Sooo... should I get my PS/2 to USB then? biggrin.gif

If I can find it... which might be 2700km away from me right now.

Afaik mouse ps/2 has always been polled/sampled, only keyboard ps/2 is interrupt based.

Also what is the point of this other than abstract visions of still useless systems? I still got my Wingman around somewhere, but that thing is unusable today.

The speed is easy, it's not like you're going to melt the encoder wheels moving the mouse too fast by hand. Extreme acceleration would be a bigger issue, the tradeoff there would be the force required to move the mouse vs the force required to overcome the tensioner and lose contact between the ball and the encoder.

I would call bull****, but all I know is for mice it ends at 200Hz and my PS/2 keyboard goes way beyond that. I guess Linux could answer this?

And before you know it, qsx has modded some ball mouse to beat out today's optical flagships.

Yerp. Adapter is 2700km away somewhere in kiev. Don't wanna buy new one for 90 cents.

afaik the adapters only work for mice that support usb and ps/2 on the same pins, like the MLT04 mice

If they don't they're emulating a ps/2 host and you might not be able to get them to run at high polling rates

I just remember some technical mumbo jumbo from ESR some years back. But the fact that you can set your polling rate for mouse ps/2 makes it pretty obvious that it is not interrupt based really, or doesn't it?
