Lower Budget Build

Thread Starter
Ok, so am making a computer mainly to be used by my gf, but also friends/family when they come over.

Wanting to keep its budget as low as possible while still being able to run my current favorite game: Paragon
https://www.epicgames.com/paragon/faq
^will likely be slightly below what they reccomend, but i will let you know how it plays it compared to my current signature rig. Will also run some benchmarks against each other.

Will also use the new rig for playing rts games, and any co-op games she may be interested it. Playing co-op games split-screen on pc is unfortunately very limited.

Current Rig Specs: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

changed the OC countless times, recently dropped the ram speed from the 2400 cl9 to 2050 cl8 due to some instabilities with the mobo. Am using a gigabyte 990fx-gaming mobo.

In process of buying parts still.

Current Part List:

Ram: 8gb G skill Sniper 1866 cl9
Price: paid $40 originally but not for this build, was in spare parts closet.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231460&cm_re=g_skill_sniper-_-20-231-460-_-Product

PSU: corsair 600m
Price: $67
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA85V3RA7634&cm_re=corsair_cx600m-_-17-139-048-_-Product
^idk why it is listed at $160, *** is up with that?

Case: DIYPC P48-BK Black USB 3.0 ATX and Micro-ATX Mid Tower Computer Case with 2 x 120mm Blue Fans (Pre-installed)
price: $31
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811353082&ignorebbr=1
^really keep this thing to the budget, measurements check out. Plan to add a spare fan i have to the side panel and over the vrms too. I know it is not impressive, but should work. May have to upgrade all the fans in it eventually if they are junk, will see.

Cooling: Hyper 212 evo
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103099&cm_re=hyper_212_evo-_-35-103-099-_-Product
price: $30

Storage: HyperX 3K 2.5" 120GB SATA III
price: $37
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16820239045

^newegg has listed on their site at 59.99 and 36.99 on ebay, both free shipping.

GPU: Asus DirectCU II OC GTX 660 Ti 2GB
price: $65 +$15 shipping = $80
http://www.ebay.com/itm/322218939699?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
^bought used, but don't forsee any issues with the card.

Mobo/Cpu: OK, so i took a gamble on this one...
Price: $56 + $11 shipping
http://www.ebay.com/itm/122064787755
^used parts purchased on ebay with this description "You are bidding on an amd fx6300 paired with a gigabyte motherboard unsure if they work" The title only said "Motherboard CPU Combo amd fx with gigabyte" So i doubt very many people saw or looked at it and my winning bid was 56 + shipping. GL to me i guess. Will test next weekend after it comes in.

Cpu: fx 6300
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA24G4CW5131&cm_re=fx_6300-_-19-113-286-_-Product
I assumed this worked, but i dont know that to be the case.

Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-USB3
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128565
^i dont even know if it is rev 6.0 or not. Or if it is even working...
(pretty strong feeling this mobo is doa, and that cpu is fine. Hopefully he just fried psu and sold the components without testing though.)
DOA

Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-970A-DS3P (rev. 2.0) AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128602
price: $60.99

Current Price Total:
$306 + $107 of spare parts = $413

Again, any suggestions or criticisms are welcome.

updates:
Only need a cooler now, which i will wait to buy until I have confirmed all used parts working or not. Stock cooler until then.

will hopefully have all the parts to assemble and test next weekend, check back then if interested.

Hope that mb is DOA and you can get one that will overclock. I had a horrible time with a 8320e and rev 6 GA-78LMT-USB3

Regardless for the price will be a nice used parts gamer

yea that's kinda what i figured when i got it, and even so i plan to overclock this board to death and upgrade it later if it isn't.

i am interested in knowing what stable 24/7 OC you used and with what cpu/vrm cooling. Specifically what your memory frequency and timings were and what you managed to get that 8320e to on it.

kind of excited to see some benchmarks, and how that gpu runs. Paragons faq actually puts the gtx 660 ti 10% faster than the r9 380. The 660 ti appears to be worse for overclocking than the r9 380, which is unfortunate. (though i will add that some did OC better than others, and that there is most certainly new bios out that will allow me to kick this card a bit harder than the ancient threads i am looking at seemed to.)

Also picking out a case today hopefully. Have not pulled the trigger yet, and am looking for any input on these choices below or any other suggestions.

hopefuly i will have better luck than that, damn.

it does appear to be a rev 6 board. hard to read the number on it so am not 100% certain but about 99% sure.

based on this http://www.overclock.net/t/1418383/fx-6300-ga-78lmt-usb3-rev-5-0-overclocking-so-far either the 6300 is better paired with the board or just the rev 6 is trash compared to rev 5. (likely a mix of both)

for $215 + $40 unused ram kit and $67 unused psu i think i did pretty good on this one if it all works. excited to see how these used parts work.

got the mobo/cpu and gpu today. will be booting it up later tonight or tomorrow.

and omg the packaging of that mobo was disappointing, and i even added a message when purchased about properly shipping. He sent with loose sata cable and the cover for the ports like audio/usb on back just rubbing all over. so pissed right now, i did an unboxing video, but i do not believe it is appropriate for the site.

update: board is dead, and chip appears to be fine. i swear i half expected broken pins. will test chip this weekend, but physically looks good. which is a great start considering the mobo, if its also dead will be gettin money back through ebay or charge back through credit agency. If it works i am happy as it was a fair price for 6300.

looking for mobo now.
______________

edit

wwill post the 970 giga board i got now and the hyper evo 212 cooler a bit later

for a total of 1mm clearance

put together updated and running.

setting closer to posing final rig pics and doing some benchmarks.

am very happy with how well the hyper 212 evo cools it. running it at 4.6 ghz and in a 30min prime 95 run didnt go over 57C. intend to see how 4.8 does soon.

tomorrow ill post some pics and run a few benchmarks since i have off work. i think it is a very nice chip in terms of voltage requirements for the OC tho. I cant remember exactly what it is set at now but i think with the llc it peaked at like 1.412 while running consistanylu at 1.388 during the stresstest @4.6. Had some cores fail at .04 less volts, but none where it sits now.

and while i went with a cheaper mobo than id prefer, GIGABYTE GA-970A-DS3P (rev. 2.0), it seems to really get the job done.

edit: i am questioning whether this $30 cooler is better than the $60 120mm aio on my main rig. may just give me the motivation i needed to to do the custom loop i have been planning on.
