i7-6800k vs i7-6850k (Or.. 28 PCI-E lanes vs 40 PCI-E Lanes)

Thread Starter
So.. I am looking at a large upgrade in a few months, I am moving to X99 from Z77. I need to make the decision between these two chips. I am questioning whether I need the extra PCI-E lanes the 6850k has (40) vs what the 6800k has (28).

At the time I get the parts, I will be running a single GTX 1070, but possibly adding another later. I will also have a dedicated sound card, a USB 3.0 expansion card and at least one NVME SSD. Due to changes in other parts on my list I probably will have enough funds to get the more expensive chip, but I would obviously prefer to save the money if I don't need the extra PCI-E lanes.

This is from the specs of the board I am planning on (MSI X99A Tomahawk) regarding SLI.

- Support x16, x16/x16, x8/x16/x8 with the CPU that supports 40 PCIe lanes.
- Support x16, x16/x8, x8/x8/x8 with the CPU that supports 28 PCIe lanes.

So.. I really haven't looked too far into PCI-E lane usage with parts on this level.. any input would be appreciated.

I have a 6800k at 3.8GHZ no voltage changes.

I'd imagine it'd only effect you if you intend to run SLI / PCI-E SSD's?

Did you read the original post? I said SLI is a very real possibility, and I will definitely have at least one NVME SSD. Whether its a PCI-E interface or M.2, it still uses 4 PCI-E lanes either way I believe.

I believe it's mostly up to you. With 2 graphics cards and a PCI-E ssd, I believe 28 lanes (the 6800k) is still plenty, the graphics cards will just run at x8/x8 and you'll still have plenty of headroom for the ssd. You would need a 40 lane CPU (6850k) to run the graphics cards in x16/x16. So the only real question is whether there's any real world performance benefit to x16/x16 over x8/x8, and if you look around on the internet you can find plenty of benchmarks that show the performance increase at the moment is almost non-existent - maybe 1 or 2 percent.

Hi. I have while new hardware i7 6800K and after 10 hours of testing , I worked out at 4.3 Ghz stable for the core voltage 1,45V

But thats the thing. The board I am gonna get DOESN'T run x8/x8 for SLI. It runs X16/x8, as I said in my first post. Also, don't forget the sound card, usb expansion card, and possibly a PCI-E Wireless adapter, depending how things work out, though those things are only 1 lane each I think.

How is this the least bit relevant to my question? Its the PCI-E lanes in question, not overclokability. This isn't the place to brag about what you achieved, it is not relevant at all to the question at hand.

How is this the least bit relevant to my question? Its the PCI-E lanes in question, not overclockability.

Even if the board itself supports x16/x8 it'll still run in x8/x8 if that's what is available.

Likewise if you really wanted to you could totally run a GPU in a x1 slot, even though the card itself was made for x16 it'll just run in x1 mode.

Thankfully PCIe is kind of an adaptive slot so it just takes whatever it can get and utilizes it.

And as far as x8 vs. x16 goes.... well...

You might have a minor, very minor performance loss based off of previous benchmarks comparing the two. Whether or not its worth spending a couple hundred dollars more for more lanes is totally up to you.

Do a test of two GTX980TI and 6800K
SLI 8x/8x = 16
m.2 ssd = 2 or 4 at most
sound card = 4
usb hub = 4?
wireless card = 4

16+4+4+4+4 = 32 lanes.

Sounds to me like you would need the 6850k unless you want to cut ONE component out. Maybe just get a mobo with wireless already? Does your mobo + case really not come with enough usb 3.0? Would be more worth upgrading mobo/case for more usb instead of spending more on the CPU and usb hub. Also looks like you'll need an e-atx mobo if you want to even fit this many components.
And like other said, the SLI will only run what it can, which is 8x/8x.

The USB 3.0 expansion card is a 1x plug, as is the wireless card, I think the sound card too. The wireless card will come out when I eventually get the second GPU, it won't be SLI from the start, but I want to look at the future here. I only need the wifi card to connect to a network printer on a different network in the house from my internet line, so I can easily enough replace that with a really cheap USB dongle when it becomes necessary. The USB expansion card is necessary, because I dislike plugging things into the front of my case when its something that stays plugged in long term. I have a LOT that plugs in by USB and stays plugged in.

The biggest concern here is the M.2 / U.2 SSDs I will eventually have. I plan to get an m.2 SSD for my OS at the time of my upgrade, and I eventually want to get a higher capacity one to connect by u.2 for game storage, once that connector inevitably takes off.

It does sound as though the 6800k should be enough though.
