The ISPs reroute traffic as soon as as they realize you're using speedtest.net or something similar so even if you're in a clogged network, it'll show you what you want to see and not what you actually get.

Calling rogers, you end up talking to a bunch of pathetic fools that pretend it's not their problem and you're getting the "real" speed and all those websites are having problems or that your modem is overheating.

TLDR: Don't use speedtest.net.

just because i have 1g/1g doesnt mean everyones servers or the route the data takes to me actually makes 1g possible. if i run the speedtest sites in safemode i get like 900/900 and when i dl games it is fast but not 1gbps fast. (it can be 0-500mbps depending)

I get 130/13 with Speedtest and hit 14MB/s in torrents and Steam. I pay for 100/10.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with speedtest.net.

still better than speedtest.

speedtest is not to be trusted for real world speeds.

Test with various other speedtest sites and get conflicting results. Most major, well known speedtest sites were reporting fantastic speeds and top notch quality of service (if QOS was avail) yet smaller ones were reporting speeds more in line with how slow everything was.

So I figured my ISP did what was a "smart" business decision and just boosted speed to those popular sites. My ISP has their tech support direct you to ooklas speedtest now.

So in short, I'll never trust these large, well known speedtest sites for statistics. I'd say cut in half the results they show to get it to look much closer to what the real results should be rolleyes.gif

Speedtest.net uses four slices to transfer data during its speed tests, which will inadvertently boost the test's data priority, which causes the numbers to be higher.  A more honest test would use a single slice to transfer data, which would accurately represent real world speeds.  I usually use SpeedOf.Me for that purpose.

Ookla gets paid by ISPs to over report speeds.

DSLReport's speed test is much better: http://speedtest.dslreports.com/

I pay for 40 down and 2 up. speedtest.net reports 42 down and about 1.98 up. If I use reputable tests and check download speeds from most major sites I get a realistic speed of about 15 to 20 down and about 0.6 up.

And yes, all reported in Mbits not MBytes.

Steam seems to do better than most, topping out at 2 MBytes. I mean, sure, even other sites can give me higher speed rating, but its rare... so I use average values. Steam has always given me better DL speeds than most anything else.

Annnd that's how you can tell if someone actually doesn't know what they're talking about. I almost spit milk at my monitor when I read that Roger's nonsense for a few reasons.
