Choosing SSD for gaming

Thread Starter
I am a music producer by profession. My studio workstation is also my PC Gaming rig. It has a 500GB Samsung 850 evo pro as boot drive and to store my main audio apps and plugins. But then I have a 2 TB internal hard drive for storage, and also recently my games. I have 200 gb of audio samples and other audio related things and I decided to get another hard drive to put in my rig JUST for games because if i have games/audio seperate, it works better for my backup workflow.

Then i realized that If i get an SSD for games they will also load faster. I am looking at different brands and seeing a pretty big price difference when I compare different ones of the same capacity.

Like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017UDPW1Q/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1Q35HYU1Y0CIG&coliid=I732GJTV7VQH&psc=1

or https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-750-EVO-2-5-Inch-MZ-750500BW/dp/B01G844L88/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1470605282&sr=1-1&keywords=samsung+480+gb

the price difference is pretty big and there are even cheaper ones like $89, and samsung up to $180
What is the main difference with all of these? I don't really care about minute differences like something crazy like 0.5-1 second faster load times since the performance going from HD to SSD is already massive. Am i missing something about these? or is it just less/more expensive brand name for no reason?
Without looking into the models (no product information on the web pages) I'm going to guess there's 2 major differences here.

1) read/write speed
2) the name on the SSD

I mean it COULD be that one is a super old model from when SSDs weren't very reliable but I highly doubt it. Just use google to find out the specs and compare them.

I have seen lots of poor reviews on corsair ssd's
maybe consider this:

For a game SSD I would recommend either this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148949

or this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820249072

because they have Marvell controllers. Over the last 5+ years I have seen many family and friends go thru SSD's with Sand Force, Indilinx, and a couple of Silicon Motion controllers. None of them lasted a year and most did not go 90 days. I have a Plextor M3Pro that has been running for over five years now. I have had my MX100 running games for 20 months now. Not one problem with either SSD. I needed a larger capacity boot drive for my Backup rig so my Pop could use it to play games, and got a Plextor 256GB M6Pro a couple of months ago for 85 delores. Great bang for buck, fast and super reliable. One can not ask for more. I have no gripes about my Sammy 840 Pro other than the price of admission. Either one of the SSD's I linked will give you a great gaming experience with no probs for a long time.

Edit: And to answer the question "what are the diffences in these drives?" it is mainly two things:
1. Type of NAND used (3D, TLC, MLC, XYZ, etc.)
2. Type of controller used (Marvell, Sand Force, Indilinx, Samsung, etc.)

The Sammy 850 EVO is also another option, but avoid the 840 EVO. I know a number of people that have had big time probs with that drive. GL with your decision.

My suggestion is to only buy Samsung. Anything you buy whether it is SATA or M2 should be faster than competition. EVO are great value.

Samsung 850 EVO seems impossible to beat for value.

What about this one? http://www.microcenter.com/product/459463/CS1311_960GB_SATA_III_6Gb-s_25_Internal_Solid_State_Drive_(SSD)_-_SSD7CS1311-960-RB
tempting because its twice the size of the 850 evo which is liek $150 and this only $50 more for 960 gb

If buying an SSD for gaming, just look for a well-known manufacturer and big size. You are loading games way less of the play time then actually play time so you don't need super speed.

I've picked up a couple Crucial SSD 480Gb on sale or Refurbed for 100$, the company hasn't treated me bad yet. Love that.
