Project Resurrect E-Machine

Hello all you lovely OCN'rs!

So for those of you that don't know, I've been slowly building a Node Zero(central networking node) under my basement stairs. Well, part of my en devour was to take my old college laptop and throw PLEX server on it. It also works as my network management console. The reason it got chosen was for the lack of LCD screen(turns out the backlit portion went out, if you look really closely at the right angle you can barely make out the screen). I was hoping to co-locate the laptop mounted behind my wall mounted TV, but alas the HDMI port is non functioning.

But I digress.....

So if you combine getting PLEX server running and running two network drops and a coax port behind the TV, I now needed something to stream my PLEX movies. "Why not get a chromecast stick to stream your PLEX" you might ask. Well...... since I'm in the mood for consolidating while expanding capabilities... buying a chrome cast would just add another device to the cramped shelf below the TV.

Currently on the shelf resides a Nintendo Wii, Samsung Blu-ray player, Power strip, Wii charging dock. So I did some research into different streaming devices and had initially thought of getting a chromecast to handle PLEX only. My budget blu-ray player already streamed my Netflix and Hulu. But after further thought and watching my wife sit on the couch and stream online movies from all different sites which don't offer app support, I asked myself "Why buy a device that is only going to add one bit of functionality?".

So this leads me to my new project: Resurrection E-Machine

I had a black EL- 1358 case and a similar white HP case in my pile of parts. Being that the TV has the nice gloss black look to it, the eMachine's case had a much better cohesive feel to it.

After a few weeks of keeping my eye out for ITX motherboards I could fit this case with, I stumbled upon a gentleman over at OCF that was selling some ITX integrated combos.

Case: Recycled E-Machine EL-1352G Slim ITX. ( Free with the purchase of a 1TB drive for $10USD )
Mobo: ASUS N3050T ( $120USD for mobo, PSU, RAM, HDD )

Memory: Corsair DDR3 1600 8GB ( 4GBx2 )
HDD: Transcend 64GB mSATA SSD
PSU: Dell 90W AC adapter
Optical: LG Blu-Ray combo drive SATA ( $20USD )

Operating System: Windows 7
Software: Windows Media Center(or Kodi??), Plex Home Theatre, Chrome for online video streaming

Things to do:
- Cut out area for IO board
- Install mobo
- Install Blu-Ray
- Figure out best location for fan
- Install HTPC software

Current State of the Case:

08/11/2016 UPDATE - It Lives!

So the motherboard arrived yesterday wheee.gif

And let the madness begin.

Of course I couldn't claim the title of modder without picking a case that needed some sort of modification. Silly e-machine and your permanent IO plate.... meet my jigsaw. Just a quick marking with an old case part and some spray paint.

And boom.... Gone!

It's not the prettiest fit, but it works.

Everything installed in the case and wired up.

And we have powa!

Man that thing is quiet, the CPU fan doesn't even turn on until it warms up. While I was getting things installed the fan didn't even turn on, can't wait to see how it works when I run Prime

Current state:

Windows 7 Pro installed
Windows Media Center settings set
Drivers installed

To do:

Install updates(would've ran these last night but I didn't get to the drivers until this morning before work)
Install Plex desktop and integrate to WMC
Connect to Plex server
Connect Netflix and Hulu to WMC
Run burn in testing to check temperatures
Install 120 quiet fan on side panel(if temps rise too high)
Buy remote with IR learning
Test Blu-ray drive
Pack away old Blu-Ray player
Begin DVD ripping to Plex Server

Thanks man! It definitely is coming together nice enough.

The CPU is nothing fancy just a Intel Celeron Dual core SoC onboard processor.
1.6Ghz, turbo to 2.2 Ghz

It definitely isn't made for gaming or anything like that, but makes a nice single stream box for my living room TV.

Updates:

Windows 7 all installed.
Netflix, Hulu, and PLEX all integrated and tested working great.
Going to do some research into possibly finding a better OS that won't be so process intensive, but we'll see.
Blu-Ray player works great, was a little laggy but once I downloaded different software it ran smoothly.
I don't think I'm going to need any additional cooling. With a 1080p stream taxing the CPU, it still never rose above 65C.

All in all it does what we need an is almost silent. The only noise you hear is from the Blu-Ray drive spinning.

All I have left to do is figure out how I want to handle the remote situation. I was hoping to find a universal that had a keyboard integrated.... but the closest one only has 5 buttons for IR learning. I'm thinking about just getting a FlirIC and using my universal remote for control. Either that or just have a air mouse and use the Win 7 "touch" keyboard on screen when searching.
