4790k overclocking, crash on GTA V only.

Hi guys. So I just recently got this i7 4790k with an msi gaming 5 motherboard. Bought this chip from someone where according to him, he got a pretty good chip. Anyway, according to him, he can get it to 4.7ghz stable with just a 1.25v. Now, after playing around with it for 2-3 days, this is what I noticed. Yes this chip can run 4.7ghz at 1.25v. It pases regularing booting, regular PC usage, Prime 95, video rendering, and gaming, with an exception of just this one game, GTA V. The game simply crashed after 5-10 minutes (program stopped working, something about that). I spent the entire day testing and found out that the game won't crash when I do 4.6ghz at 1.275v. I also tried 4.7 upward to 1.290v, and it still crashes the game after 10-15 mins.

SO my question is, why is it only this game? Is there something with GTA V to the point that it stresses the cpu so much that it is very sensitive even to the smallest instability? I am just wondering because I can pass Prime 95 for 30 minutes + and other games + different tasks alright but this game.

Secondly, if I do need to make a jump above 1.3v, how much is still safe? As you can see from the specs, my cooler is an h110i GT.

Thank you for your help!

Sometimes a certain game or program can cause a crash when it's stable otherwise. You most likely just need to bump the vcore up a little more to make it stable in GTA V.

You should be able to go to 1.35v on the vcore provided your temps are ok. It'll run for years like that. I personally don't like to go above 1.42 vcore, you'll probably be limited by temps at anything above that anyway. If it was me, I'd go right to 1.35v and see if the game still crashes. If it doesn't crash you can start backing down until it crashes again.

Here's a great over clocking guide if you haven't found it already. http://www.overclock.net/t/1411077/haswell-overclocking-guide-with-statistics

Ah I see. Thanks for your input, I will have a look at that. Mind you though, I just changed the multiplier and the vcore, and what I have noticed is that despite the fact that I do 1.28v, since its adaptive, it will go to like 1.95v max during stress testing. I just recently decreased my voltage on the bios to 1.260 and I noticed that it can actually go up to 1.28 based on cpu-z monitor. And yeah my temp is fine.

WElps, I just tested GTA V on a stock 4790k (yeah like literally stock 4.0ghz boost to 4.4ghz with voltage set to auto) Game still crash. So i think its not the issue of my overclocking then. Then logically speaking, this chip does indeed capable of running 4.7ghz with 1.25v

I had exactly the same issue and thought it was my previous 4930K that was at fault. Turned out that GTA did not like my otherwise 100% stable clock on the GPU's! So perhaps try to downclock your card slightly and see if it's stable.

is there any mods on GTA V?

mine would crash because of too many body guards.

The thing is, I just recently changed cpu and mobo from an i7 2600 non k. I have been running 160mhz oced (so 1500mhz during full load on my gpu) at all time literally since I first got it back in 2014. If I am not mistaken, I have been playing GTA V with 150-160+ oced and its fine. Still worth the try though, who knows, it might actually be my gpu overclocking after all. I do can recall that on Overwatch, when my memory gpu overclock is a bit too high (totally fine for other games), my screen will turn black, change to random colors, weird stuffs like that.

My game is pure vanilla, no mods installed whatsoever. I just tested prime 95 on my 4790k at 4.7ghz for 15 mins, and as always, stable as rock. Its just this game. I will try downclocking my gpu because now I am certain that its not my cpu that causing the game to crash. Heck, it might actually be the game hating the new windows 10 anniversary update XD

prime stable is usually 24 hours.

try checking the integrity of local files.
