5820k overclocking low voltage/ high temps..

Thread Starter
Did some updates to my rig with a 5820k and such but really at a loss and needing some thoughts but did not want to cluster the owners thread with this post. I am seeing some strong temps, especially for the hardware and voltage... hoping I can get some feedback or thoughts?

The relevant hardware:

5820k
ASrock X99X killer fatal1ty
EVGA 1000w platinum (overkill but clean power)
EK supremacy evo block (i2 insert and thinnest jet plate)
EK 980ti/ Titan X block (gpu is in the loop with cpu)
EK 240mm PE rad
EK 360mm PE rad
Swiftech d5 pump w/ Bitspower mod top/ res combo
5x Vardar 2200 industrial fans on the rads (semi aggressive profile)
Nzxt h450 case

Picture of the loop mostly ready to go (Please ignore the gold screws, temps until the black button head allen I ordered came in).

Base temps with no overclock. CPU stress only for about 10 minutes in AID64 and XTU for the screen caps. I have run much longer and the results are in line with the results in the link. 26-26.5c ambient, 60% fan speeds, d5 pump on 5 setting.

I have used both gelid and as5 for TIM. I thought I under applied on the TIM so I have gone heavy as well. Same results either way. I did not take pictures of the light but I did of the heavier if anyone wants to see that mess.

So I also did some overclocking and wow yea this chip is running so hot for me with a simple OC and really low voltage.

45 multiplier, vcore adaptive peaking 1.221, and the vccin/ input voltage 1.9.

Aida64 cpu only - peak spikes 70-73c, consistently mid upper 60c range.
XTU cpu only - peak spikes 82c, consistently upper 70c range.

Even just doing some gaming or heavy multitasking with twitch going, youtube, surfing, etc all going on various monitors I see the below (ignore min temps, didnt open at idle).
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/205025283726770187/212385543932084224/normal_temps.jpg

Seems a bit hot.

I should follow up and say NO I do not think that is a totally stable OC/ vcore cause its just aida64 or xtu stress testing or gaming. With the temps already seemingly high I am a bit gun shy to try any bench testing or anything with avx/ avx2 instructions.

I am just super frustrated with how hot it already is cause something is wrong to touch the 80c+ range with only 1.22 on a decent loop on a fairly mild stress test... even with higher ambient and gpu in the loop.

Pump is running good speed/ flow, fans have a good profile, all quality components, plenty of radiator, cpu block seated multiple times, air bled for hours and hours shifting case positions before running, etc... :|

What's the TJmax listed in HWmonitor.ini?

Also, I'd recommend making both radiators intakes, and everything else exhaust.

TJmax in the configuration file is 105c.

Verified temps in core temp and hwinfo64 as well... all are reading the same.

Your temps are completely fine.

The way temperature is reported is as a delta relative to TJmax and software/firmware has to make assumptions as to what that TJmax rating is in order to report a temperature. Many boards assume a much lower TJmax and will thus report a lower temperature, even if true temp is identical. Thus I always recommend looking at the delta to TJmax and ignoring absolute readings.

For example, because my X99 SOC Champion defaults to 92C TJmax, your CPU, at exactly the same voltages, clocks, and cooling, in the same ambients, would report a peak temperature of ~69C in XTU, despite the true temperature being virtually identical.

So my boards higher default TJmax is the issue in my programs like hwmonitor, core temp, etc reporting high? Please do not take it wrong and I maybe a bit dense but I really have not seem much about that being a common issue. Is that something maybe a bit unique to the asrock board I am using? Do you know if the TJmax is consistently lower typically on other manufacturers or what the correct default TJmax is said to be for 5820k?

I will have to do some more reading on the topic.

ETA: I appreciate the replies and information btw, thank you.

Most people don't have any idea how Intel's temperature reporting works, so just throw around arbitrary and, lacking context, often meaningless temperature recommendations.

It's not unique to ASRock, but ASRock X99 boards do tend to default to higher TJmax values than Gigabyte or ASUS.

My Gigabyte X99 SOC Champion defaults to 92C TJmax, same chip in my ASRock X99 OC Formula defaults to 103C.

I have no idea what the true TJmax reading is. It may very well vary from sample to sample, just like stock VID.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter. As I mentioned, the actual temperature sensor only reports the delta and that is all you really need to know. Your 5820K's peak temperature, as stated in your original post, is 23C from the point PROCHOT is tripped, which is within the range of normal for a 4.5GHz 5820k under your custom loop.

Interesting, well I hate to feel uneducated about something but I am admittedly not as knowledgeable about this it seems.

This is the first time I have run anything but Asus board in the past few years and always looked to the standard temps readings I would get since they seemed to line up with others. So I guess I really overlooked the more in depth topics about temperatures.

Started basic... http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1800828/intel-temperature-guide.html

Learning more as I continue about this but I have to say I still get them impression I am on the hot side for this chip. A good number of other boards use a default 105c TJ max temp but you are completely right that some do not use 105c. Intel has only called out a Tcase max temp and not a Tjunction max temp so there seems to be no standard for board manufacturers to follow. That makes it pretty confusing to have a definitive temp unless you are drilling the ihs for a probe for Tcase temps. Reading Intels spec sheets, bulletins, or things like their 57 page "Intel® Core™ i7 Processor for LGA2011-3 Socket Thermal Guide" was not as helpful as I hoped.

Did another little real world test which of course leaves room for plenty of variables.

COMPLETELY reset bios to factory and ran just CPU: OCCT stress with large data pack (since already had it installed on a friend machine) to compare to someone I know with a similar loop (although 30mm thick rads instead of 40 like mine)/ same board/ processor/ etc also on stock settings (albeit my ambient is 2-3c higher @ 26.5 again)... I am seeing 61-60-64-60-64-57 on my cores peak compared to the highest core he had was 49c. Sure some differences in hardware but the difference in temps seems like more than that.

Even milling a trench for a TCASE probe would only give you a definitive temp to compare to others who had done the same thing. Far easier to just use the "distance to TJmax" reading or make sure the same TJmax is used.

There can be a pretty wide variance from CPU sample to CPU sample. Not all parts will have similar leakage and differences in stock VID won't always mask this. Even with perfectly identical systems, settings, and cooling, you'd still need to verify that power consumption at the CPU itself was the same before ruling out this natural variance.

The CPU package power reading in HWmonitor looks plausible for your test setup, so comparing that with your friend's sample should reveal if there is any significant difference in heat output these two 5820Ks at stock. If the power consumption is close, something may well be wrong with your loop or your waterblock mount.
