New to AMD FX - Two RAM issues - Page 3

well that sucks.

if entirely different hardware and sftware doesnt fix it, its a motherboard issue.

one last bit of magic to try is older BIOS setups, but that can be risky at times, as current BIOS sometimes will glitch out and be corrupt when attempting to flash older dated files

I removed the backplate of the Hyper 212 thinking it might be shorting out some solder joints around the CPU/RAM area. Not the case. Same thing with stock cooler.

@mattliston That's a good thought that I haven't tried yet. I did reflash the newest BIOS but haven't gone backwards.

This board supposedly has a dual BIOS setup but I can't find where to toggle it.

download the PDF manual and browse through it

sometimes its hidden in the manual. sometimes its only in the BIOS waiting to be found.

I suggest a usb 1.1 or usb 2.0 drive if flashing. do NOT attempt to flash off usb 3.0

many motherbaords have a usb port dedicated to flashing, and will ignore other usb ports attempting to do so. example, my Asus CHVFZ has one usb 2.0 port that is white and cannot even be de-activated in BIOS unlike all other ports

I flashed downward to a previous BIOS. Booted up just fine but same problems.

Something strange... The board won't post with only a single RAM stick in ANY slot. It requires RAM in matching color slots to post.

Hi. I experienced the same thing with my son's pc that I built. Even exchange cpu and ram and nothing seems to get it to work. What was so silly was that one of the case screw stand-off pegs near the pci-e slot for the first gpu didn't seat exactly on the motherboard, after fixing that the dual channel worked. First time happened in all my builds. My eyes are getting that bad coolsmiley.png

Did you also get the "only 3.98GB of RAM usable" in windows?

I always setup my systems on a cardboard box before installing them in the case so I know it works before I do the work.

I've experienced this same problem with losing dual channel in my setup running a couple of particular CPU's ( FX 4350 and 8320) BUT it wasn't the board - For some reason it's like these CPU's were causing the problem.

Now here's the weird part of it all.... These same CPUs can then be placed into a different board and they work fine, no lost RAM or anything.

I can then drop another CPU into the same board showing this problem and it all works.... Like it should.

I'll use one as an example that's been doing this consistently with certain boards, namely my 8320.

In my older CHV it drops dual channel like yours everytime but if I place it into the CHV-Z that's used for benching it doesn't have the prob, same with the Sabertooth 2.0 I bench, works great with it too.

Now you may want to say it's because the CHV is an older 990FX board with an older BIOS but wait..... The most recent board purchase I've made, also being a CHV-Z bought new this past March for my latest DD has the same exact issue with it!
BIOS is up to date and everything and I know it's not the boards in question, they both run other FX Vishys I have just fine except for the named 4350 chip.

Could be you're experiencing a finiky chip/board combo like I have here but at least I know what chip works correctly in what board I want to run it in.

The UD3P has very specific slots to use to run over 1600mhz and is finicky as hell with RAM in general, you need to check the manual. It may or may not be stable doing it either, I know the last one I had would not under any circumstance go over 1866 and I tried probably 6 kits of ram on it.

Same issues as here, all RAM detected in BIOS (sometimes it would say only one stick was "enabled") and only half in OS. It wasn't the CPU either because at the time I had 3 different FX chips and they all acted the same on that board. Its a good budget board but it seems like Gigabyte cut some corners with the BIOS.
