New to AMD FX - Two RAM issues - Page 6

Looks good!
Did you tried with the XMP before?

I mean even if they were 2133 CL10, the settings that you had in the op, seemed too tight for those sticks, maybe that was the issue.
Mine ended similar:
2133 10-11-11-30 6-44-14-7

Also just out of curiosity which are your temps with that CPU overclocked?

I was trying all kinds of RAM settings before this new board.

I hit about 46c @ 4.4GHz tonight. Haven't had much time to fine tune.

I tested my Asrock (990FX) when 1st got it with one memory module in each slot when got it with a bootable Linux CD. It works with one stick in any slot and does it at 2400 speed. It does 2 x 4gb with one in A and 1 in B at 2400 speed or 2 only in the A or B bank. It runs good with 3 sticks also, but at 2100 with an occasional fault. 2400 is a no go with 3 sticks. It gets unstable with 4 sticks at 2400 or 2100 but does just fine with 1866 speed. I don't know that this just the way the chipset works or it is just the way Asrock did it. I am sure that your weird thing is the board's fault. The only question I have what does it do with 4 X 4Gb ?

BTW Star Wars Battlefront runs a lot better with 16Gb than it does with 8Gb.

I think this should answer that:

I had this same issue with my system. I found lowering the ram clocks to 800 or 1066mhz would give me my full amount of ram. I set the timings as tight as the bios would allow and it barely lost any numbers in benches. Not happy about it, but didn't see this solution mentioned here.
4 sticks of 1866 dont cause issues on amd. neither does 2133.

I have 32gb of 2133 CL11 running happily and fully stable. gave me a very nice boost in loading performance on my way over modded skyrim games (metric butt ton of texture files)

I have noticed a LOT of AM3/3+ motherboards not running their projected ram voltage. Id set 1.65 for my sticks, and the voltage monitors in BIOS and in software would read 1.61. this caused a huge amount of memory errors during testing. setting it to 1.68 gets me 1.652 or so according to bios and software, and has been very stable since then.

Gigabyte boards are notorious for not running things at the correct voltages, and that is the primary concern with the problems. Many people dont dig in deep enough, but OP seems like he knows his stuff, so Ill let it be lol.

Hope the new board stays stable and lets you have some fun!

(BTW my motherboard has voltage outputs for a multimeter for ram, cpu, cpu/nb, nb, and ht. those voltages were within 0.01 volts of what the BIOS showed)

This is my exact situation. 4x4GB of Corsair Platinum 1866. Had to set all DRAM Strength settings to like 1x just to get 1600 to boot, but can't OC FSB to 240 needed to get my 1866 TO 1866. Refuses to boot, OC failed msg at POST... Hate my board, wish my sabertooth never died... frown.gif

Hi there, This is where it gets a bit confusing against the documentation and what people have done. I think those high end boards have tweaks, as it let the 1866 or higher as an OC mode that bypass the limitation set by the FX x3xx documentation. At 1600 to run it max 1776 (222x multiplier) you have to set NB multiplier not to exceed 2400, while the HT multiplier sometimes should be set accordingly but some 990 chipset allow beyond that. 8350 is at 2400 while 8310 is at 2200 max. This works with CPU proportionally with its multiplier so may set it a bit lower to get your desired speed. Because I fiddle with my board without burning it and also just with a 970 chipset with 4+1 power, I haven't gone to the extreme as it will require a higher 8+ power to go to this.

Just having 2 sticks of 1866 is more forgiving with to higher settings, but with four sticks of it, goes against to limitation.

This how I started:http://www.overclock.net/t/1421270/using-bus-speed-matching-ddr3-speed-on-fx6300-and-on-fx6350#post_20673154

Asrock 970 Extreme3 R2.0, Antec True Power Classic Gold 550W, FX8310 and 4 x8 Kingston Fury 1866 DDR3. To achieve something higher a larger PSU and a 990FX chipset may make it work.

Not all motherboards are created equal and how they handle ram is one indicator. I can only speak of how my 4 x 4 gb G Skill ram works in the MSI GD80 and the Sabertooth.

The bios in the GD80 allows the ram to be set and run at 1866 but soon runs into stability problems and it could never quite break the 2000mhz barrier, but it runs quite well just under it.

The Sabertooth bios only allows the ram to run at 1866mhz at stock clocks or a multi only overclock. To OC the FSB it needs to be set at 1600 and then just run up the clocks using FSB. It destabilizes for me just over 2000mhz.

You need to explore the bios and find what it wants to do and just go where it wants you to go.
