First time media server planning : a litte help?

Hi lads and gents,

I'm considering getting rid of my 3 external storages, as they're cumbersome, will eventually fail like any storage is ought to, and for the sake of doing something new for me biggrin.gif

And I'm a total noob. I'm such a n00b I know NOTHING about data storage in general.

I want to build
  1. a streaming media server at home (mainly for ripped movies I totally got legally, yeah, why you ask?), for two devices maximum
  2. that would be able to download torrents (it of course would be for the sake of that legal backup loophole we got in Switzerland, as I indeed can't rip DVDs, because reasons)
  3. and would hold at least 4TB of data (not a lot, I know, but I'm on a budget)... 6TB if I get cheap HDD
  4. and it would be a mini-itx nas
  5. and it should be at least partially redundant, as I do not want to loose the 2TB of movies I've got so far (yes, that's nothing, but it's something, and I intend to expand our collection wink.gif )
I don't really need it as a personnal files backup, as I use a cloud service (also for syncing between the laptop and my gaming rig).

My main question is WHAT DO I DO? WHAT OS DO I USE ?
I was thinking of something like unRAID, which idea of RAID but not really a RAID is interresting... but I don't know if I actually need an OS (can find the info myself, but been reading a lot so I'm starting to mix the informations). FreeNAS doesn't have that kind of non-RAID-but-it's-better capatilities, if I understand, but... it's free.

What would you do? It doesn't has to be maintenance-free but has to be somewhat easy to do so. Did I miss something to consider?

So, the specs of the would-be glorified mediaserver/NAS I've been able to gather so far :
  • Case : Node 304
  • Processor : i3 4130
  • MoBo : Asus Z87i-pro C2 (6 SATA ports !) IF I can unbend the pins, or a spare Gygabyte H97
  • PSU : SeaSonic G550s, or anything else fitting in the node if it does too much noise
  • Hardrives : got a Seagate Barracuda 2TB, want to get another 2TB from another brand... Or something 3TB or 4TB ?
  • OS : got nothing yet, don't know what to get frown.gif

Use Linux without a GUI and just FTP your files over to a raid storage device that you mount in your /home or you can download your uh files through sending the uhh "links over". I bought an older proliant server for 50 bucks have have about 2TB of sas drives (about 50 dollars total) in raid and it works for gaming and streaming.

What Linux distro should I us if I make a media server like this ?

Also, I would like to stream those movies, does it still make sense with my proposed ring? I've just forgot to tell you, but it has to be accessed from a pc (windows 10) and a mac. I would like to leave it in my living room (router) or the office room (got a CPL extender)...

I use Ubuntu LTS 14.something for both of my server and use filezilla and smarTTY for all of my server managing needs. There are many options for how to stream this media to both mac and windows 10 (which I have no trouble with). I have my server set up where I can access my media from anywhere in the world (assuming there is internet).

You can check out a few options for your media. I use ampache for my music for examples. You need to decide if you want a web-based outlet or using something like plex (which may be easier).

You can give something like subsonic a try if you are feeling frisk, but just google a few different media center ubuntu stuff and see what you feel comfortable setting up and using.

Thanks for your advice ! I will look into it. I was thinking about Plex or Kodi for streaming video and music, but I will see your other proposition for music...

Personally I use Windows Server 2012 Essentials myself. Mainly because it runs all the software I need, and I don't need to mess around with some 3rd party SMB file sharing software to allow all my windows computers to gain access to the file server. I pretty much use SMB for all data streaming needs locally, KODI opens files directly from my server. However I do use Plex for streaming out of my network, which is where Plex works best. So my Parents can stream from their home, or I can stream from my hotel room. Works Great.

I have 22TB of Raw storage in my server, and have them all setup to be redundant. So all my data is on atleast two drives at a time. This is a must, and I would never skimp on redundancy.

I highly recommend getting a pair of Toshiba's high performance/capacity drives. These are faster than what WD and Seagate are offering, and comes with a good warranty.

https://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Desktop-7200rpm-Internal-Drive/dp/B013JPLKQK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1471102775&sr=8-1&keywords=toshiba+5tb

I have 3 of these in my server, along with a few other older 2-3TB HDDs. These Toshiba Drives are the fastest I own.

Ubuntu is not a bad choice, but I would go with a full GUI install myself. As there are thing you will want to do that will require a GUI. Then just install some type of VNC server, so you can remote into the machine. This way you never need a monitor connected to it. Also setup a VPN, this way you can VPN back into your network and Remote your pc from anywhere.
