RX 480 in Linux with AMDGPU-Pro Driver

Has anyone been successful folding with the latest AMD proprietary driver on an RX 480 or other AMD GPU? I can run FAHBench, and scores are similar to what I get in Windows.

The Folding client recognizes my GPU, gets a WU assignment, and then immediately gets an interrupt. This is a never ending loop of retries. Am I missing something obvious?

OS: Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
GPU: RX 480
Driver: AMDGPU-Pro

I am trying to put together some more performance numbers for the RX 480, so any help would be appreciated.

I did set up that 24/7 folding rig with pair of R9 Furys, but it is on Windows. If I can find time, I can set up an Ubuntu USB drive and mess around with that. No promises I can actually get any information (at least in a timely manner) for you because I've worked with Lunix for all of 5 minutes or so.

Thanks for the offer.

No big deal, I have a few Linux machines, but none of them currently have AMD GPUs. I am going to put a 480 back on the test bench, and I'll update this thread once I get it up and running.

I am using the open-source AMDGPU driver with the necessary OpenCL bits added in via an AUR package.

I'm not sure what changed between the 16.30 driver and the current 16.50 driver, but everything appears to be working now.
:wheee:
Is it any better or worse than the proprietary driver? Or for that matter with Windows?

I have the RX 480 folding in Linux again. For some reason there were conflicts when I had the 1050ti set as the primary card. I had no issues running the two cards for BOINC projects, but folding on the 480 with the 1050ti as the primary card would cause the 480 to fail all tasks. The error might be related to the fact that the current Linux NVIDIA drivers cannot fold core21 WUs, and might be using some non-standard library calls that are conflicting with the AMD drivers.

For now I only have the 480 running, and the 1050ti is idle. I am going to let it fold a few tasks before I reinstall the NVIDIA drivers. This is not how I ultimately want to have it setup, because this machine serves as the test bed for my main rig which uses a 1070 for the primary GPU.

Currently clocks on the 480 are 1306/1750, with fan set to 70%, and GPU temp is 57 C. Folding a p11711 with a TPF of 3:50 for 287k PPD. I'll add some results to the GPU database after the Foldathon.

The AMDGPU-Pro driver has been updated, and there is talk on the Phoronix forums of improved performance in OpenCL tasks. I updated the 480 to the latest driver, and I will run some WUs to see if there are any improvements for F@H.

*EDIT* Initial results are looking great. Currently folding a p13500 at 334k PPD. I folded four p13500 WUs on the previous driver, and the average PPD was 283k. If that 50k bump in PPD holds true across the board, then that would put the Linux driver very close to the performance of the 480 in Windows.

I'm not running Ubuntu, but for a grahical sensor display you could use psensor. For my rig I use a script to set the fan speed at boot, and I monitor GPU temps in my status bar (i3blocks).

The main reason I am not using the Pro drivers in Arch Linux, is because the current AUR package is a bit of a mess. That is why I went with the open-source/OpenCL hybrid install. It also just works, and will be one less thing to wipe from my system when OpenCL gets added to the open-source stack.

For Ubuntu/Miint I would probably try out the Pro driver first, since it should be a fairly straight forward install that way.

When I get a PSU for my folding rig I'll toss my rx480 in there and try it on Mint with the pro driver. Hopefully that will be sometime in the next week or so. In addition to the PSU, I'll likely need a CPU too. Would I have any issues running a cheap g3258 and a couple 970s?

This amdgpu crap driver is giving me fits. I got it to install on mint 18.1. FAH sees the card just fine, but it is folding on the cpu and not the card. opencl is installed

Kernel is loaded

lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 vga
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Device [1002:67df] (rev c7)
Subsystem: PC Partner Limited / Sapphire Technology Device [174b:e347]
Kernel modules: amdgpu

secure boot is off

fahbench only sees the cpu

going out of my mind

What version of the AMD driver are you using? Anything before 16.50 will not work.

Part of the problem could also be the client. The GPU slot detection and assignment is not good with different types of cards. I have the same issues in Windows and Linux. For Windows I had to force it to use a custom config.

Can you post the first 60 or so lines of the F@H log, where it lists all the system stats and the config.

Driver is 16.60. I found the problem, it is the same problem I had a few weeks ago on another machine. When FAH starts the WU, the driver segfaults.

I don't have my logs anymore because in frustration I installed windows. YOU KNOW I had to be frustrated to install windows.

j/k I like windows, linux and bsd all the same, like children. Except one of my children is no freaking good. (I think I need meds)

I am going to bump this thread, since I never updated it runnig the newer drivers. As of the last AMD driver the RX 480 Linux performance seems to be equal to Windows. I am going to let it fold for a few days, and then I will update the thread with some WU info.

If anyone has a 480 in Windows it would be nice to have a few more entries in the GPU Database to compare my Linux results to.

I have a Fury with 16.1.1 drivers. It folds at 1101 on the core with Win 7. The Sandy Bridge 2600K in the Z77 is holding it back a little bit.

Sorry for going off topic.

You should bump the Fury up to the 17.2 drivers. The newer drivers should bump your ppd by 10% or more.

Can confirm. It's a pretty significant gain.

Do you have link to that driver? I downloaded the 17.2 software and hardware driver package but it has the same 16.1.1 video driver from November 2016 and the one that I'm using. Maybe I missed something.
