[Ars] No Man’s Sky Windows port launched today, is kind of a mess - Page 5

Runs OK on both my laptop and desktop:

I followed the info on this page:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=213366255&postcount=1

FOV set at 140 is like FOV 90 on other games, it feels almost perfect, might want to try 130 or so.

My problem with the game isnt the performance, its just sorta bland right now.

games like this are another reminder that consumers as a whole are stupid
post #44 of 96
I've been saying for over a year now this game is going to flop. Every video they released showed many flaws with the core game. There was no gameplay, when asked what you can do the response the main developer always gave was "explore and trade". That doesn't make a game, and definitely doesn't fill a universe full of content.

Even without the performance issues, the game is just not good. I have no problems with resource grinding simulators, my favorite games are Minecraft, Factorio, Terraria, Stardew Valley, etc, but this game just doesn't compare to any of them - and they all cost a fraction of this. It's just is an overall bad game, with massive problems in both the core gameplay and on the technical side of things.

When someone asked the developer if he thought it was going to flop, he gave a shrug emote. Combine that with the delay, and the fact we still didn't have any real explanation on "what we do in this game", i'm unsure why anyone would have bought this game at launch. I guess that's why we have steam refunds?

^ I don't know why anyone would pre-order a game when the main developer can't even assure you that the game will be good.

Only played about 1 hours. From what I have seen you just gather resources and fly the ship. I like concept if it was a world filled with players.

Yep, thisis why I was weary of the game. Sure it had potential but dancing around the multiplayer issue and the procedural generation were pretty large warning bells in my head. I'm glad I played the "wait and see" game. I'll be buying Mankind Divided instead.

I want a game that would be like "Outlaw Star".

Agreed, there is more to an interesting game that what we have here now.

And that statement is certainly not reassuring. And the one he made just one day before the game came out for the PS4 saying that the game was niche, may not be for everybody, may be divisive, I bet that Sony gave the game to a select group for playtesting to see how a larger audience would react to it on release and the feedback must have been very divided, if not actually mostly negative, hence his post.

Anyway, even considering the limitations of what they achieved, at the end of the day the game's data fits in 2.5 GB, with around 10 GB of space required once installed. There is only so much an algorithm can do to make procedurally generated planets and animals continually refreshing throughout your journey if the assets simply aren't there. Think about it, the whole game almost fits twice on a single layer 4.7 GB DVD. You can fit three copies of the game on a dual layer DVD. And to think that they recorded the gold image of the game on a 25 GB Blu-ray (as you can see on Sean Murray's Twitter). I hope Sony didn't waste money printing the game on Blu-rays for the PS4 just for show when it fits on a single layer DVD.

It may run now (but not fully yet) with the experimental branch that they posted today:

Improved AMD Phenom Support
Thousands of lines of assembly have been rewritten overnight to support AMD CPUs. Unfortunately whilst the game code no longer relies on anything above SSE 2, Havok Physics still requires “Supplemental SSE 3”, which was not supported until “Bobcat” and above. We’re discussing with Havok.

Here is the full list of fixes:

Alt-Tab has improved
Some systems/configs were crashing or not pausing correctly on Alt Tab. This should now be resolved.

Shader Caching
Framerate was initially stuttering due to shaders not being correctly cached by the GPU on some systems. We have replaced the GPU caching system. You may notice some stutter during the Galactic Map intro to the game (the very first time you run), but it should be smoother from then on (this will be fixed in future). This is particularly true on ATI cards

Mouse Jitter
Smoothing on mouse movement has been improved to prevent hitching or stuttering, and is now adjustable through the Options menu in “Mouse Smoothing”.

Max FPS Cap
On some CPU/GPU configurations, setting Max FPS to 60 or 30 was not giving 60 or 30 FPS (causing stuttering). This has been improved.

Improved Performance
On CPUs with 4 threads or fewer, performance has been improved.

Intel GPUs
The game will now let you know if you are trying to run with an unsupported GPU. This will hopefully flag for some users that their high end GPU has not been selected.

Gsync
Gsync has been disabled by default, which was causing an issue for some users
